Coreopsis hybrid Incredible Swirl Seeds
(Coreopsis x hybrida — Incredible Series — Fleuroselect Novelty Award Winner)
Coreopsis Hybrid Incredible! Swirl is the most visually dramatic and architecturally distinct variety in the Incredible series — and the only one in the series to have received a Fleuroselect Novelty Award, the European seed industry’s recognition for genuinely innovative new varieties. It is a Fleuroselect Novelty Award winner with unique white flowers and an attractive burgundy eye — a recent award that recognized both the flower color combination and the distinctive petal form as genuinely new contributions to the Coreopsis assortment.
The color of Incredible Swirl is deceptively complex. The mix of cream and cranberry–plum acts as the perfect bridge flower — neither purely white nor purely pink, the cream base and cranberry blotch occupy the warm neutral zone between the two that harmonizes with both cool-toned and warm-toned companions without conflict.
Most flowers bloom with a white ring around a burgundy eye, but there is natural variation — some will be a pale creamy yellow and some can be streaked with burgundy. This natural variation within the individual variety — unlike the formula mix variation of Sea Shells and Dwarf Mix — means that each plant carries its own expression of the cream-and-burgundy theme, and a mass planting of Swirl shows a subtle, naturalistic range of tone rather than the uniform repetition of a single fixed color.
The small but mighty flowers are just 2.5 cm across, but the maroon petals dipped in lemon cream make them pop, floating atop long, wiry stems. This plant creates clouds of color that gently sway in the breeze — constantly humming with beneficial insects, from small native bees to bumbles and butterflies. It starts flowering in late spring, and when deadheaded will remain flawless and floriferous throughout the season.
These flowers are long-lasting and prolific, blooming in abundance. A compact, bushy plant typically growing to a height of 30 to 120 cm depending on growing conditions, with fine, thread-like green leaves which serve as an understated backdrop that lets the flowers take center stage. They hold their own in front of the showiest dahlias and cannas. Butterflies adore coreopsis — gardeners wanting to attract butterflies would do well to include coreopsis in their plans.
Tall, bushy, and prolific, Incredible Swirl is a quick and easy grower that draws an abundance of butterflies and bees. Planted in mass, the blooms are a feast for the eyes and make a showstopping display. An excellent choice for a pollinator garden, cut flower garden, or for colorful height toward the back of a flower bed. Generously cut blooms for fresh arrangements and bouquets — this will encourage the plant to develop even more flowers throughout the season.

Plant Information
- Height: 60–120 cm (varies significantly with soil fertility and growing conditions — leaner soil produces shorter, self-supporting plants)
- Spread: 40–60 cm
- Plant Type: Hardy annual with perennial tendencies
- Habit: Tall, bushy, airy — cosmos-like wiry stems producing clouds of small flowers
- Flower Size: Approximately 2.5 cm across (small, very numerous)
- Flower Form: Single daisy with flared, notched petal tips — the swirling appearance most visible in direct sun
- Flower Color: Cream-white with deep burgundy-red central blotch — natural variation between plants
Germination Instructions
- Leave seeds uncovered as light is needed for germination.
- Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost and press gently in without covering.
- Germination takes 3–7 days at 15–21°C under optimal conditions.
- Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before planting out.
- Days to maturity: approximately 100 days.
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist throughout germination.
- Once seedlings have developed two to three true leaves, transplant into individual 7.5 cm pots and grow on before moving to the final outdoor position at 30–45 cm spacing.
- Support netting is recommended for taller plants in exposed positions.
Important height management note for Kuwait: in rich soil or with abundant water, Incredible Swirl can get very tall and may flop — growing in poorer soil and limiting water once established keeps plants shorter and more self-supporting. - For Kuwait’s raised beds, use a leaner soil mix than for other ornamentals and water conservatively once plants are established — this naturally controls height and eliminates the need for staking in most positions.
- For Kuwait: direct sow outdoors in September–October for earliest flowering.
- The 100-day maturity period from an early September sowing aligns peak flowering with December–January.
- Alternatively sow indoors in August–September for October transplanting.
Growing Tips
- Grow in full sun in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil.
- Grow in poorer soil and limit water once established to control height and prevent flopping — rich soil and abundant water produce plants that may require support netting.
- Water consistently during establishment then reduce to conservative irrigation. Deadhead or cut regularly — generously cut blooms for fresh arrangements and bouquets, which will encourage the plant to develop even more flowers throughout the season.
- Harvest stems when one or two flowers are open per stem — flowers will continue to open in the vase.
- You can also harvest when the bud is cracked and you start to see petal coloring.
- Harvest during the coolest time of day.
- Allow some seed heads to remain at the end of the season for self-seeding and bird feeding.
- The airy, cosmos-like habit of Swirl means it provides excellent see-through planting at the back of borders — its tall wiry stems allow shorter plants in front to remain visible rather than being blocked.
Gulf Planting Season
- Direct sowing outdoors: September to October
Indoor sowing for earliest display: August, transplant September–October
Peak flowering season: December to March (100-day maturity requires earliest possible sowing)
Extended season: continues into April–May
Note: Incredible Swirl has the longest days-to-maturity of the four Coreopsis varieties in this catalogue at approximately 100 days — an early September sowing is required to achieve peak December–January flowering. - This makes it the only Coreopsis in the catalogue that benefits from an August indoor start in Kuwait’s air-conditioned conditions.
- The tall, airy character of Swirl positions it as the back-of-border choice among the four varieties — plant it behind SunKiss, Sea Shells Mix, and Dwarf Mix to create a layered Coreopsis border of 30–120 cm that covers the full height range from front edging to tall architectural statement.
- The cream and burgundy bicolor of Swirl at the back of such a planting acts as a unifying neutral bridge between the bolder colors of the lower-growing varieties — precisely the role described by Seedaholic as “the perfect bridge flower in bouquets or in the garden.”
Garden & Floral Uses
- Coreopsis Incredible Swirl is a good all-purpose size that fills in bare spots and makes a fantastic mass planting.
- The fine, thread-like green leaves serve as an understated backdrop that lets the flowers take center stage.
- These plants can hold their own in front of the showiest dahlias and cannas — for almost any sort of garden, a hardier, more beautiful flower would be difficult to find.
- Planted in mass, Incredible Swirl blooms are a feast for the eyes and make a showstopping display — an excellent choice for a pollinator garden, cut flower garden, or for colorful height toward the back of a flower bed.
- As a cut flower, Swirl is the most productive of the four Coreopsis varieties per plant — the tall, branching stems carry dozens of the small bicolor blooms simultaneously, and every cut stimulates replacement stem production.
- Stems can be harvested when the bud is cracked and petals beginning to show color — flowers will continue to open in the vase for several days after cutting. In mixed arrangements, the cream-and-burgundy bicolor of Swirl fulfils the classic bridge flower role — harmonizing with warm tones like coral, rust, and copper, and with cool tones like lilac, lavender, and white, without competing with the focal flowers for attention.
- Alongside lisianthus, ranunculus, and stock in a Kuwait cool-season cutting garden arrangement, Swirl provides the movement, texture, and neutral bicolor bridge that transforms a simple three-variety bouquet into a visually complex, sophisticated arrangement.
