Helianthus Annuus Vincent’s Choice DMR Seeds

(Professional F1 Cut Flower Sunflower — Downy Mildew Resistant)

The Vincent’s series represents a major step forward in sunflower breeding. Vincent’s was bred to be less sensitive to day length for greater flexibility in programming, allowing growers to produce high quality crops early, mid, and late season. Vincent’s Choice DMR takes this further with the addition of proven Downy Mildew Resistance — a breakthrough that makes this variety significantly more reliable and lower-risk for professional and serious home growers, particularly in humid or warm conditions where Downy Mildew pressure is elevated.

Strong and vigorous, Vincent’s Choice boasts large blossoms adorned with an extra ring of rounded, overlapping petals. Bright golden-yellow, they surround a chocolate brown center. The pollen-free blossoms face upwards (instead of nodding) on strong stems and necks. The upward-facing flower orientation is a significant advantage for cut flower use — blooms sit prominently on display without drooping, maintaining an open, welcoming posture throughout their vase life.

The pollen-free characteristic is equally important for cut flower applications. Pollen from conventional sunflowers stains surfaces, fabrics, and arrangements, limiting their use in indoor settings. Vincent’s Choice DMR produces no pollen, making it suitable for interior floral design, events, and any application where cleanliness is essential.

The series produces an extra ring of rounded, overlapping petals for better-filled, more attractive flower heads, with flowers facing upwards on strong stems and necks, a shorter crop cycle and concentrated harvest for increased margins, and strong seeding and plant vigor equal to higher harvest percentage than other varieties.

Better height under short days, not too tall under long days — this height management characteristic is particularly valuable in the Gulf, where day length varies across seasons. In Gulf autumn and winter sowings, the shorter day length will produce well-proportioned 100–120 cm stems ideal for cut flower use. In spring sowings with longer days, plants remain manageable rather than excessively tall.
For Gulf growers, the Downy Mildew resistance is especially relevant — warm, humid Gulf conditions, particularly in the cooler season, can create conditions favorable for Downy Mildew development. DMR protection removes this vulnerability entirely.

  • Excellent vase life as a professional cut flower.

Plant Information

  • Height: 100–180 cm (typically 100–130 cm in Gulf cool-season conditions)
  • Habit: Upright, single stem, strong neck
  • Flower diameter: 12–15 cm
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Soil: Well-drained soil of average to good fertility; tolerates most soils including poor
  • Water: Moderate — deep watering 2–3 times per week; drought tolerant once established
  • Spacing: 15–25 cm for cut flower production; 30–40 cm for garden display
  • Days to flower: 55–60 days from sowing

Seed Germination

  • Seed depth: 1–2 cm — lightly cover with soil
  • Germination time: 5–10 days at 20°C
  • Ideal germination temperature: 20°C minimum 5°C
  • Sow directly into the flowering position or start in individual deep pots for transplanting. Cover seeds lightly with 1–2 cm of soil and keep moist. Germination occurs in 5–10 days at 20°C.
  • Sunflowers develop a long taproot quickly and resent root
  • disturbance — if starting indoors, sow in biodegradable pots and transplant with minimal root disturbance.
  • Thin to final spacing once seedlings are established.

Growing Tips

  • Vincent’s Choice DMR can be sown directly in the garden or started in individual deep pots for transplanting.
  • Sow at 1–2 cm depth, cover lightly, and keep moist. Germination is fast — 5–10 days at 20°C.
  • For cut flower production, sow in rows at 15–20 cm spacing between plants.
  • Tighter spacing produces taller, more uniform stems. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization — too much nitrogen encourages leafy growth and smaller, less robust flower heads.
  • A balanced fertilizer applied at planting and again at the bud stage is sufficient.
  • Denser plantings or excess nitrogen can lead to smaller flowerheads with less robust stems.
  • Moles Seeds In cut flower production, moderate fertility and proper spacing are the keys to the best stem quality.
  • For cut flower harvest, cut stems when the first ray petals are just beginning to crack open from the bud — buds that are still tight will not continue to open fully in the vase.
  • Place immediately in clean water with a floral preservative.
  • Vincent’s Choice DMR is pollen-free, so there is no risk of pollen staining the petals, water, or surrounding surfaces.
  • In Gulf conditions, Vincent’s Choice DMR performs excellently as an autumn-to-spring cut flower crop.
  • The day-length flexibility allows sowing across October through February for successive harvests through the Gulf cool season.
  • The DMR protection is particularly valuable in the Gulf’s humid autumn and spring transition periods when Downy Mildew pressure is highest.
  • Succession sowing every 2–3 weeks from October onwards provides a continuous harvest of fresh stems through the Gulf cool season and into spring.

Gulf Planting Season

  • Best sowing time in the Gulf: October–February (direct sow or indoor start)
  • Expected flowering: 55–60 days from sowing — November through April with successive sowings
  • Note: Day-length flexible — suitable for year-round Gulf production.
  • DMR protection is especially valuable in humid Gulf autumn and spring conditions.
  • Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest.

Cut Flower Harvesting Guide

  • Harvest stage: When the first 1–2 ray petals have just begun to unfurl from the bud
  • Stem preparation: Re-cut stems at an angle; place immediately in clean water with floral preservative
  • Vase life: 7–12 days with proper conditioning
  • Pollen-free: No staining risk on petals, surfaces, or water
  • Storage: Pre-condition at 5–8°C for 2–4 hours before arranging for maximum vase life
