Marigold Erecta White Swan is the world’s first tall hybrid African marigold bred specifically for professional cut flower production — a landmark variety in the history of ornamental marigold breeding. It produces large, firm, ball-shaped, fully double blooms in creamy white on strong upright stems reaching 60 to 80 cm, with a mild and sweet marshmallow fragrance entirely unlike the typical pungent marigold scent. Heat tolerant, disease tolerant, and long-vase-life capable, White Swan is equally outstanding in the cutting garden, ornamental border, and large container display. Flowers are edible.

Marigold Erecta White Swan Seeds

(African Marigold — Cut Flower Hybrid F1)

Tagetes erecta White Swan carries both a distinguished horticultural heritage and a remarkable personal tribute. White Swan is the first tall hybrid marigold specially bred for professional cut flower production. The name is given in remembrance of Dame Margot Fonteyn and her portrayal of Odette-Odile as The White Swan in Swan Lake. The combination of a groundbreaking breeding achievement and a dedication to one of the greatest ballet dancers of the twentieth century gives White Swan a depth of identity rare among annual bedding plants.

Bred especially for the cut flower market, White Swan offers firm, uniform, creamy white, fully double blooms borne singly or in clusters on long stems. The odorless, ball-shaped flowers have a long vase life and can be dried for everlasting arrangements. White Swan has a uniform, upright habit and a vigorous growth rate. It is high heat and drought tolerant, generally pest and disease free, and deer resistant.

The blooms produce a mild, sweet, marshmallow fragrance without the typical strong marigold scent — a quality that makes White Swan suitable for uses and settings where other marigolds would be unwelcome. The flowers are cream to pale yellow-colored, fully double, and uniform on productive, sturdy plants. White Swan is significantly taller and higher quality than all other cream-colored marigolds.

White Swan is one of the favorite cream marigolds for cut flower and wedding work, with flower sizes that are not too overbearing, making them perfect to pair with dahlias and wisps of ornamental grasses. Marigolds benefit from having their main stem pinched back when the plant is 8 to 12 inches tall, encouraging the plant to branch out and produce more and longer stems.

In Kuwait, Tagetes erecta White Swan performs as a warm-season annual suited to the full growing season from September through May. The species’ high heat and drought tolerance make it genuinely adaptable to Gulf conditions, and its clean creamy white color — rare among marigolds — makes it a versatile and sought-after cut flower and garden specimen across the region.

Plant Information

  • Family: Asteraceae.
  • Botanical name: Tagetes erecta.
  • Common names: African Marigold, American Marigold, Aztec Marigold.
  • Type: Annual.
  • Hybrid: F1.
  • Height: 60 to 80 cm.
  • Width: 30 to 33 cm.
  • Flower: Fully double, ball-shaped, 6 to 7 cm across, creamy white to pale yellow.
  • Fragrance: Mild and sweet, marshmallow-like.
  • Exposure: Full sun. Water: Moderate — allow soil to dry slightly between waterings once established.
  • pH preference: 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Edible: Yes — petals edible with floral, citrus, and slightly bitter flavor; remove bitter base before consuming.

Seed Germination

  • Sowing depth is 0.2 cm — cover seeds only very lightly with soil.
  • Germination temperature is 21 to 24 degrees Celsius, with germination occurring in 5 to 14 days.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the germination phase.
  • For transplants, sow indoors in plug trays 4 weeks before the intended planting-out date. Lightly cover seeds with coarse vermiculite, keeping soil moist until emergence, then allow it to dry slightly between waterings. Sow one seed per cell.
  • Transplant to individual pots at the true-leaf stage.

Growing Tips

  • Pinching off the tops of established plants results in bushier plants with heavier bloom, and deadheading regularly encourages continued flowering throughout the season.
  • Pinch when 8 inches (20 cm) tall to establish a more robust, branching plant.
  • Marigolds perform best in full sun.
  • Transplant to cell packs at the true-leaf stage and fertilize weekly with weekly 2–3 ml per liter of water nitrogen.
  • Space plants 30 cm apart in the garden.
  • Deadhead regularly to increase blooms.
  • Harvest marigolds when flowers are starting to open.
  • Stems when cut should be 24 to 32 inches long.
  • Place them in water immediately and hold at 2 to 5 degrees Celsius for conditioning.
  • Sturdy stems and durable heads make reliable cuts, with a typical vase life of 7 to 14 days when conditioned.
  • For the Gulf growing season, the warm months of September through November and February through April provide the best conditions for vigorous growth and maximum flower production. During the peak heat of December and January nights which can drop to 10 degrees, growth may slow temporarily but will resume as temperatures stabilize. Water deeply once or twice a week once established rather than frequent shallow watering. Feed lightly at planting and avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.

Gulf Planting Season

  • Sow indoors in protected nursery conditions: August through October, and again January through February.
  • Transplant to garden beds, large containers, or cutting garden rows: September through November, and February through March.
  • Expected flowering: November through May, depending on sowing time and conditions.
  • White Swan is heat tolerant and can continue producing through Kuwait’s transitional spring months. It will decline in the extreme summer heat of June through August — treat as a cool-to-warm season annual with two productive windows per Gulf year.

Garden and Floral Uses

  • Shown to best effect when mass planted, White Swan is perfect for beds, borders, and containers.
  • As a cut flower, it is prized for its clean creamy white color — a neutral tone that combines with virtually any other flower in mixed arrangements.
  • The edible flowers can be used to dress up salads and desserts or cooked in egg or rice dishes.
  • The flavor is floral with hints of citrus and spice and slightly bitter. Remove the petals from the flower base before consuming as the base can be quite bitter.
  • Root secretions from Tagetes erecta have an insecticidal effect on the soil, effective against nematodes, making it a valuable companion plant for vegetable gardens with tomatoes and other susceptible crops.
  • The creamy white blooms provide a rare neutral ground in the marigold palette, making White Swan a versatile and sophisticated choice for Gulf gardeners who need a warm-season cut flower that pairs with roses, lisianthus, dahlias, and ornamental grasses without competing in color.
