Silene pendula Sibella Lilac Seeds

(Nodding Catchfly — Sibella Series)

Silene pendula Sibella Lilac belongs to the Sibella series, a breakthrough lineup of Silene pendula developed by Dutch breeder Van Hemert & Co. The Sibella series is a truly innovative range of Silene pendula with a completely new plant habit. It is an excellent plant for bedding, early spring baskets, and patio containers. The plants are hardy and can overwinter in a cold glasshouse for early flowering.

Silene pendula Sibella Lilac is a delightful, compact annual producing a profusion of soft lilac-pink blooms that brighten the garden from late winter through spring. It forms low, gently spreading plants that create a colorful carpet of small, delicate flowers. The airy clusters of lilac flowers add a soft pastel touch to planting schemes and combine well with other summer annuals.

A multitude of three-quarter inch lacy blooms create a soft and airy lilac-pink haze in winter and spring. Mounds of delicate and shiny silver-green leaves mound and trail to 30 cm tall and 60 cm wide. Sibella Lilac is an excellent choice to plant in hanging baskets and mixed containers, or to use as a small-scale ground cover.

Sibella silene plants are self-cleaning — flowers do not scatter and no deadheading is needed. All Sibella silenes are Fleuroselect Approved Novelty Winners. This self-cleaning characteristic is a significant practical advantage in the Gulf garden, where regular maintenance during the busy cool season can be demanding.

Silene pendula is native to the Mediterranean region, making it naturally adapted to bright sun, free-draining soils, and mild winters — a climatic profile closely matching Kuwait’s cool growing season from October through March. The species’ Mediterranean origin means it has inherent tolerance for lean, sandy soils and moderate drought once established.

Variety Details

  • Silene pendula, commonly known as nodding catchfly, is an annual herbaceous plant in the Caryophyllaceae family, native to the Mediterranean region of southeastern Europe including Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

  • Grow at 15 to 18 degrees Celsius and transplant after 4 to 6 weeks.
  • In the Gulf context, sow indoors in a protected nursery environment from September through October for transplanting in October and November. Light aids germination — cover seeds only very lightly with vermiculite or a thin dusting of compost.

Growing Tips

  • For biennial bedding and early spring baskets, sow in autumn — September through October — and overwinter in a cold glasshouse. After 6 to 8 weeks, plant one plant in a 15 cm container or three plants in a 30 cm hanging basket or pot.
  • Silene pendula is very easy to grow and performs best in sunny positions.
  • It tolerates poor soils as long as drainage is good. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and require very little maintenance.
  • Plants may self-seed naturally if some flowers are allowed to mature.
  • Deadheading will prevent unwanted seedlings and encourage continued flowering. Therapyofflowers
  • Pinch out growing tips when seedlings are 8 to 10 cm tall to encourage a fuller, more branched habit and denser flowering coverage.
  • In the Gulf garden, the plant performs from October through March. It will decline naturally as temperatures rise above 30 degrees Celsius.
  • No staking is required. No chemical growth regulation is needed.
  • The spreading trailing habit fills containers and baskets from all sides without intervention.

Gulf Planting Season

  • Sow indoors in protected nursery conditions: September through October.
  • Transplant to containers, hanging baskets, or garden beds: October through November.
  • Expected flowering: December through March, depending on sowing time and conditions.
  • Summer cultivation is not suitable. Silene pendula requires cool temperatures between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius for best growth and flowering.
  • Plants will decline when daytime temperatures consistently exceed 30 degrees Celsius.

Garden and Floral Uses

  • Sibella Lilac is ideal for summer bedding, borders, containers, and hanging baskets.
  • It’s neat, spreading habit allows plants to fill spaces beautifully, making it a wonderful choice for patio containers and cottage-style gardens.
  • Silene pendula is highly valued in ornamental gardening for its cascading growth habit, ideal for rock gardens, borders, and edging, where it effectively spills over walls or container edges to create a soft, flowing effect. Its trailing stems fill spaces between rocks or along pathways, enhancing the naturalistic appearance of plantings.
  • In the Gulf garden, the soft lilac-pink tone of Sibella Lilac combines naturally with the white of Alyssum, the blue of Lobelia, and the deeper purple of Viola for a layered cool-season display.
  • The spreading habit and airy flower texture make it an ideal spiller component in mixed container designs, softening the edges of pots while the more upright plants anchor the center.
  • The self-cleaning nature and proven drought tolerance once established make it one of the lowest-maintenance cool-season annuals available for Gulf Garden conditions.
