Silene Pendula Sibella Mix Seeds
(Nodding Catchfly — Sibella Series Blend)
Silene pendula Sibella Mix brings together the complete color range of the Sibella series in a single, versatile blend. Sibella Mix silene has a beautifully cascading habit, covering itself in late winter and spring with lacy, three-quarter inch flowers in carmine, lilac, pink, and white. Airy, mounded plants with shiny silver-green leaves grow 30 cm tall and trail to 60 cm wide. Stunning when cascading out of hanging baskets and other garden containers, Sibella Mix also excels as a seasonal small-scale ground cover.
Sibella is a truly innovative series of Silene pendula with a completely new plant habit. It is an excellent plant for bedding, early spring baskets, and patio containers. The plants are hardy and can overwinter for early flowering plants in spring. It can be grown as a cold crop alongside pansies and spring-flowering perennials.
Sibella can be planted outside in late fall and the spreading plants make a colorful carpet of tiny flowers early in the season. Sibella is also suitable for growing in hanging baskets, and as it blooms early it will fill the first flowering baskets of the season. When started from sowing, Sibella can be used for bedding and baskets in both sunny and shady spots in the garden.
The four colors in the Sibella Mix each carry their own Fleuroselect recognition. All Sibella silenes are Fleuroselect Approved Novelty Winners, and Sibella Carmine won the Fleuroselect Gold Medal — the highest award in European ornamental horticulture — for its outstanding intensity of color, bright semi-double flowers, and early flowering. Growing all four colors together creates a natural, layered display where the carmine anchors the planting with depth, the lilac and pink add softness and contrast, and the white brings brightness and airiness to the overall effect.
Sibella silene is awash in vivid flowers that cascade over containers and carpet beds with a tumbling profusion of petite blooms. No deadheading is needed — plants flower over a long season wherever nights cool down. A lovely companion to violas, pansies, and primroses of spring in containers and cottage gardens.
In Kuwait’s cool-season window from October through March, the Sibella Mix performs as an outstanding container and bedding annual. The Mediterranean origin of Silene pendula ensures natural affinity for bright sun, free-draining soils, and mild winters, all of which characterize Kuwait’s growing season.

Seed Germination
- Sow seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil and barely cover. Light aids in germination.
- Kept at 20 to 21 degrees Celsius, germination occurs in 7 to 14 days.
- For annual bedding, sow in the pack at 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.
- Cover slightly with vermiculite and keep slightly moist. Grow on at 15 to 18 degrees Celsius and transplant after 4 to 6 weeks.
- For biennial bedding and early spring baskets, sow in autumn — September through October — and overwinter in a cold glasshouse.
- Do not cover seeds heavily as light aids germination.
- Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost and press lightly into the surface with a thin dusting of vermiculite.
- Maintain consistent moisture throughout germination without waterlogging.
- For Gulf conditions, sow indoors in a protected nursery from September through October for best results.
Growing Tips
- After 6 to 8 weeks, plant one plant per 15 cm container or three plants in a 30 cm hanging basket or pot.
- Vigorous plants quickly fill space in containers, hanging baskets, or the garden.
- No deadheading required — plants are self-cleaning. A cool, sunny location gives best results.
- Pinch growing tips when seedlings reach 8 to 10 cm to encourage a more branched, fuller habit.
- The spreading plants will cascade naturally from container edges and baskets without staking or intervention.
- Water approximately once a week once established, increasing during dry spells.
- Do not overwater or allow to become waterlogged.
- Mix compost or well-rotted manure into the soil prior to planting for best results.
- Plants may self-seed naturally in suitable conditions — deadhead if self-seeding is not desired and allow seed to mature if natural drifts of next-season color are welcome.
- In Kuwait, plants will begin to decline naturally as April temperatures rise consistently above 30 degrees Celsius.
Gulf Planting Season
- Sow indoors in protected nursery conditions: September through October.
- Transplant to containers, hanging baskets, or garden beds: October through November.
- Expected flowering: December through March, depending on sowing time and conditions.
- Summer cultivation is not suitable.
- Silene pendula requires cool temperatures between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius for best growth and flowering. Plants decline when daytime temperatures consistently exceed 30 degrees Celsius.
Garden and Floral Uses
- Silene pendula Sibella Mix is suited for hanging baskets, mixed containers, patio pots, window boxes, bedding borders, and seasonal ground cover.
- Sibella Mix excels as a cascading basket plant and small-scale seasonal ground cover, creating a multicolor carpet effect.
- The four-color blend produces a naturally harmonious display — carmine and pink together warm the planting while lilac and white cool and brighten it.
- In the Gulf garden, the mix pairs beautifully with cool-season companions such as white Alyssum, blue Lobelia, Violas, Pansies, and Primrose for a fully layered winter-to-spring display.
- The self-cleaning habit, tolerance of lean soils, and spreading mounded form make Sibella Mix one of the most effortless cool-season annuals available for Gulf Garden conditions, delivering continuous color from container edges, basket rims, and border fronts with minimal intervention.
