Strawberry Ruby Ann F1 Seeds

(All-America Selections Winner — Ruby-Red Flowered Ornamental Strawberry)

Strawberry Ruby Ann F1 is the flagship variety of the ABZ Seeds Hanging Basket ornamental series — an F1 hybrid bred specifically to deliver the most dramatic, vivid ruby-red flower color available in ornamental strawberry production. Ruby Ann is a real eye-catcher for its sensational ruby-red flower color. The compact plant produces a ruby-red cascade of flowers and sweet fruits throughout the whole summer. Ruby Ann is the new flagship of the ABZ Hanging Basket series for the ornamental market.

The flower color of Ruby Ann is its defining characteristic. Ruby Ann produces the reddest flowers of the varieties available in the hanging basket series — a deep, vivid ruby-red that is more saturated and intense than the rose-pink of Toscana or the semi-double rose-pink of Summer Breeze. The large, five-petaled blooms are produced abundantly and continuously from early in the season, creating a striking visual display that rivals any ornamental flowering annual.

Both ornamental and productive, Ruby Ann produces abundant clusters of large, vivid ruby-red flowers with bright yellow centers during the Gulf growing season, beginning in late winter and continuing through spring. These are followed by a generous harvest of dark red, juicy, sweet, conical fruits.

In Gulf conditions, sowing is best from May to June. Flowering typically begins from January to April, followed by fruit production from February to April, before rising summer temperatures reduce plant performance. The contrast of the brilliant red blooms, richly colored fruits, and glossy dark green foliage creates a layered ornamental display of exceptional visual appeal.

Ruby Ann develops a compact plant with very few runners. The sensational deep red flowers appear very early in the season. These characteristics make Ruby Ann well suited for the Hanging Basket series as well as the Early and Compact series.

Ruby Ann has a mounding and trailing habit with fewer aggressive runners than standard varieties, making it ideal for contained spaces and vertical gardening.
As with all strawberry varieties, Ruby Ann performs best in cool temperatures and will pause naturally during the hottest Gulf summer months, resuming productive flowering and fruiting as temperatures moderate in autumn.

  • Habit: Compact mounding with restrained trailing runners
  • Foliage: Lush, glossy dark green

Seed Germination

  • Seed depth: Surface sow — press lightly into soil, do NOT cover deeply
  • Germination time: 7–14 days under optimal conditions
  • Ideal germination temperature: 18–22°C
  • Important: Ruby Ann F1 seeds require light to germinate — surface sow and do not cover.
  • Cold stratification for 3–4 weeks at 2–5°C before sowing improves germination rates.
  • Ruby Ann has relatively large seeds for a strawberry variety, contributing to its fast and uniform germination.
  • Do not over-fertilize during germination as strawberries are sensitive to high salt levels at this stage.

Growing Tips

  • After cold stratification, sow Ruby Ann F1 seeds on the surface of a sterile, moist seed-starting mix at 18–22°C. Press lightly into the surface without deep covering.
  • Maintain consistent moisture and good light.
  • Germination is fast and uniform thanks to the relatively large seed size.
  • Once seedlings develop their first true leaves, pot up into individual small pots and grow on in full light at a minimum 15°C. Seedlings develop quickly into strong plug plants.
  • After 6–7 weeks, plants are ready for their final containers or hanging baskets.
  • Plant in rich, fertile, well-drained potting mix.
  • Keep the crown at or just above soil level.
  • Water consistently at the base to keep foliage dry. Feed every two weeks with a balanced strawberry fertilizer once plants are established and continue throughout the flowering and fruiting period.
  • The very few runners of Ruby Ann keep it tidy and self-contained in hanging baskets and pots.
  • Any runners that do appear can be removed to maintain habit and redirect energy to the mother plant’s flowering and fruiting or pegged down to root new plants.
  • To encourage a more vigorous start, remove the first flush of flowers to allow the plant to build a strong root system before committing to full production.
  • In Gulf conditions, the cool autumn-to-spring season provides ideal growing conditions.
  • Ruby Ann is semi-evergreen in frost-free climates and may persist and re-flower in subsequent seasons.
