Tattoo Black Cherry features showy cherry red star-shaped flowers with deep purple eyes and deep purple streaks at the ends of the stems. Well-branched and very floriferous plants present stunning cherry red blooms with petals that are brushed in dark purple. The plants bloom all summer, are heat and drought tolerant, great for garden beds and patio containers, and display their best color in warm, bright conditions.

The Tattoo series displays the best color contrast under warm conditions with higher light levels. Colors lighten with higher temperatures and light levels. When grown under cooler conditions and lower light, colors appear darker overall with less contrast and more purple area.

Seed Germination

• Vinca roseus seeds require darkness to germinate. Unlike many flowering plants, these seeds must be covered and should not be surface sown.
• Sow one seed per cell or small pot using a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix with an initial pH of 5.8 to 6.0. Cover the seeds with approximately 5 mm of soil and press lightly to ensure good contact with the medium.
• Place the tray in a warm environment without direct light during germination. Maintain a consistent temperature of 24 to 27°C. Under optimal conditions, germination typically begins within 5 to 7 days, with full germination occurring within 7 to 14 days.
• Keep the growing medium evenly moist at all times. Avoid letting it dry out, but do not overwater, as excess moisture can lead to damping-off and poor seedling establishment. Bottom watering is recommended to prevent seed disturbance.
• Once seedlings emerge and develop their first true leaves, move them to a bright, sunny location and begin normal seedling care.

Growing Tips

• Maintain growing-on temperatures at approximately 24°C during the day and 18 to 20°C at night. Use a well-drained growing medium with a target pH of 5.5 to 6.0.
• Begin fertilization one week after transplanting. Apply a balanced liquid feed once per week at a rate of nitrogen 3–5 ml per liter of water, using a formulation with low phosphorus and relatively higher potassium to support flowering and plant strength.
