Zinnia Aztec Sunset
1,950 د.ك
Zinnia Aztec Sunset is the award-winning Mexican zinnia that brought an entirely new color palette to the zinnia world — a 2007 Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner, it is a remarkable bicolor mix of mostly fully double blooms in bold, warm coolers, with floriferous, well-branched, compact plants that spread in a colorful carpet of flowers and. Where standard Zinnia elegans delivers large single-color blooms, Aztec Sunset delivers miniature dahlia-like domed flowers in intricate bicolor combinations of buttercream, gold, cranberry, rust, and merlot that no other zinnia can match — and with a heat tolerance that earned it the Dallas Arboretum’s Flameproof designation for surviving Texas summer conditions.

Zinnia Aztec Sunset Seeds
(Zinnia haageana — Mexican Zinnia — Fleuroselect Gold Medal Winner 2007)
Zinnia haageana ‘Aztec Sunset’ belongs to a completely different species from the tall, large–flowered Zinnia elegans that dominates most seed catalogues. Zinnia haageana, the Haage zinnia or Mexican zinnia, is a fast-growing annual in the Asteraceae family and native to Mexico — compact, exceptionally heat tolerant, drought resistant, and naturally mildew resistant in a way that most Zinnia elegans varieties are not. Where Zinnia elegans was developed from South American species and tends toward tall, large-flowered ornamental breeding, Zinnia haageana is a true Mexican wildflower that has retained the heat endurance of its native habitat through all its ornamental development.
The flower breeders are delighted that all their hard work over ten years of development resulted in Zinnia Aztec Sunset being awarded a Fleuroselect Gold Medal — the highest European seed industry prize. This spectacular zinnia produces floriferous, dwarf, bushy plants clothed in striking double flowers in a wide range of vibrant color shades, including many bricoleurs, with excellent weather resistance and a long-lasting colorful display in borders or containers.
This brilliant, eye-catching mix includes a wide range of miniature, bicolor blooms in shades of buttercream, gold, cranberry, rust, and merlot — a palette that captures the warm glow of a desert sunset hour by hour across the growing season.
Aztec Sunset is a mid-sized garden plant covered with miniature dahlia-type blooms in unique bicolor patterns. The dome-shaped double flowers are individually small — approximately 5 cm across — but produced in such quantity on the well-branched, spreading plants that the overall effect is of a continuous carpet of warm sunset color. No two flowers in the mix are exactly alike, and the bicolor combinations — where one tone radiates from the center and a contrasting tone appears at the petal tips or margins — create a natural depth and complexity that solid-color zinnias cannot achieve.
Plants are exceptionally heavy flowering and show strong resistance to powdery mildew. Aztec Sunset has earned the Dallas Arboretum’s Flameproof award for its ability to thrive in Texas heat — a recognition that is directly relevant to Kuwait growers, as Texas summer conditions are broadly comparable to Kuwait’s transitional season temperatures. This is a zinnia that does not merely tolerate heat but performs actively through it.

- Height: 45–60 cm
- Spread: 30–45 cm
- Plant Type: Half-hardy annual
- Habit: Compact, bushy, well-branched, spreading
- Flower Size: Approximately 5 cm across (miniature dahlia-type domed form)

- Days to Flower: 65–90 days from sowing
Germination Instructions
- Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting outdoors.
- Sow onto the surface of good free-draining, damp seed compost and lightly cover 3 mm deep with vermiculite.
- Place in a propagator or seal inside a polythene bag at a temperature of 20–30°C until after germination, which usually takes 7–14 days.
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist throughout germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual 7 cm pots and grow on in warm conditions before planting out at a final spacing of 20–25 cm.
- Direct sowing outdoors is also effective — sow 6 mm deep directly into prepared beds once soil temperature is above 20°C.
- Pinch young plants at 20–25 cm height to encourage maximum branching and stem production.
- For Kuwait: unlike most cool-season ornamentals in this catalogue, Aztec Sunset does not require cool germination conditions.
- Sow directly outdoors in October or start indoors in September without refrigeration.
- The warm soil temperatures of October in Kuwait are ideal for fast, reliable germination — this is one of the simplest and most forgiving annuals in this catalogue to start from seed in the Kuwait climate.
Growing Tips
- Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0.
- Pinch plants when 20–30 cm tall to encourage strong branching and maximum bloom production.
- Water consistently at soil level — never overhead — keeping the soil evenly moist but allowing it to dry slightly between waterings once plants are established.
- Aztec Sunset is more drought tolerant than Zinnia elegans once established and will continue to perform through brief dry spells that would stress larger-flowered zinnia varieties.
- Deadheading is not mandatory — the plants are self-cleaning and will continue blooming without intervention — but regular cutting or deadheading does increase stem and flower production significantly.
- For cut flower harvest use the wiggle test: grab the stem 20 cm down from the flower and gently shake it — if the stem is droopy or bends it is not ready; if stiff and erect it is ready to cut.
- Do not put cut zinnias in the cooler.
- Zinnias are notorious for making their water murky — add a few drops of bleach to the vase water.
- Expect a vase life of 7 days.
Gulf Planting Season
- Direct sowing outdoors: October to November
- Indoor sowing for earlier display: September, transplant October
- Peak flowering season: November to March
- Extended season: continues actively into April and May as temperatures rise
- Note: Aztec Sunset is the most heat-tolerant zinnia in this catalogue and the only one with independently verified performance in extreme heat conditions.
- Its Zinnia haageana heritage gives it genuine resilience through the transitional season between Kuwait’s cool winter and early summer — it will continue flowering actively into April and May when all other cool-season ornamentals in this catalogue have already finished.
- For Kuwait growers who want maximum seasonal value from a single sowing, Aztec Sunset offers the longest continuous flowering window of any zinnia available from seed.
- No special germination setup is required — direct sow in October.
Garden & Floral Uses
- Aztec Sunset is suitable for mass plantings and cutting — a mid-sized garden plant covered with miniature dahlia-type blooms in unique bicolor patterns.
- In the garden, the spreading, carpet-forming habit makes it exceptional for filling large border areas and raised beds with continuous warm-toned color through the full Gulf cool season and beyond.
- The bicolor mix — with it range from pale buttercream to deep merlot — combines naturally with virtually any other cool-season planting without conflict, and the small dome-shaped flowers provide texture and filler value that large-flowered zinnias lack. As a cut flower, Aztec Sunset provides an abundant supply of miniature bicolor stems that are outstanding as filler and texture material in mixed bouquets alongside larger focal flowers such as lisianthus, ranunculus, and anemone.
- The warm sunset palette of rust, gold, cranberry, and cream pairs particularly well with Maché Chocolate ranunculus, cream stock, and copper-toned alstroemeria for arrangements that reference the warm, earthy aesthetic that dominates contemporary Gulf event floristry.
