Germination Instructions
- Before planting, soak your Levante® Blu anemone corms in room-temperature water for 3–4 hours — shorter than the 6–12 hours required for Mistral series corms.
- Let a little water trickle into the soaking bowl to increase the oxygen in the water.
- After soaking, the corms can either be planted directly into the ground or pre-sprouted inside.
- For pre-sprouting, place the corms in flats with drainage holes, cover the corms lightly in moist soil, store at 7°C (45°F), and check on them daily.
- Plant corms with the pointed side down in well-draining soil, 5–7 cm deep, spacing 10–15 cm apart.
- If the pointed side cannot be identified, plant on the side — the growing point will orient itself naturally.
- Keep soil temperature below 15°C during the root growth phase for optimal development.
- Anemones thrive with a cool start to promote strong root development and optimal flowering, growing best with a soil temperature of 5–10°C during the initial phase.
- For floral arrangements, cut stems for bouquet making when the buds are just starting to show color for the longest vase life.
- Cut the stems on the diagonal for best hydration.
- They are heavy drinkers — vase life increases with fresh water daily and keeping flowers away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- In Kuwait, plant corms directly outdoors in mid-September to October once temperatures begin to moderate from summer heat.
Growing Tips
- Levante® Blu grows well in the garden, in pots, or in a cool greenhouse.
- Not fully winter hardy but tolerates light frost down to -5°C.
- Corms can be stored after flowering and replanted, allowing enjoyment for multiple seasons.
- Anemones thrive with a cool start for strong root development — keep soil temperature below 15°C during root growth.
- Water regularly but avoid waterlogging — the corms are susceptible to rot when dormant in wet soil.
- They do not like to be wet when dormant, so it is best to lift corms if the planting area will be watered once dormancy begins.
- For cut flowers, cut stems on the diagonal for best hydration and provide fresh water daily — Levante® anemones are heavy drinkers, and vase life increases with consistent fresh water.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources after cutting to maximize vase life.
- The fully double form of Levante® Blue — the characteristic that distinguishes it from every previous anemone series — is best appreciated at the fully open stage where all petal layers are visible.
- Unlike the single open-faced Mistral varieties where the dramatic black center is immediately prominent, the fully double Levante® Blue reveals its center gradually as the outer petal layers unfold — making the bloom’s opening stage a visual event in itself.
- In Kuwait’s cool season, the vibrant blue-violet of Levante® Blu registers most vividly in the clear, lower-angle winter light of December through February.
Gulf Planting Season
- Plant corms outdoors: Mid-September to October, once temperatures begin to moderate
Soil temperature during root growth: Keep below 15°C — cool start is essential for optimal development
Days to flowering: Approximately 90 days from planting — earlier than Mistral series
Flowering: December through March for mid-September-planted corms
Flowering continues: Until temperatures routinely exceed 21°C
Lift and store corms: After foliage dies back naturally — corms do not like to be wet when dormant
Note: Levante® Blu is the most recently released and most technically advanced anemone variety in this catalogue — the fully double form represents a genuine first in commercial anemone breeding that only became available in 2023. - In Kuwait’s cool-season cutting garden, the Levante® series is confirmed to bloom earlier and more abundantly than standard anemone varieties, making mid-September to October the optimal planting window for first blooms from December onward.
- The fully double flower form of Levante® Blu changes the visual character of the anemone entirely — where the single open-faced Mistral varieties present as large, flat, poppy-like blooms where the dark center is immediately and dramatically visible, Levante® Blu presents as a dense, rounded, many-petalled bloom that more closely resembles a small double ranunculus or peony in form.
- This form difference makes Levante® Blu the most suitable anemone for mixed bouquet use alongside ranunculus varieties in this catalogue — the doubled form providing visual compatibility with the doubled ranunculus while the true-blue color provides the one tone that no ranunculus variety in this collection can deliver.
Companion Planting
- Levante® Blu is primarily grown for its outstanding ornamental and cut flower value as the most advanced and recently released anemone series available.
- In the cool-season garden, the vibrant true blue-violet fully double blooms of Levante® Blu create the most sophisticated color and form combination available in any single variety in this catalogue — full doubling in true blue, a combination that was not available in any anemone series before 2023.
- Companion planting around Levante® Blu should priorities color contrasts that allow the true blue to register at maximum vividness.
- Pure white companions — white lisianthus, white snapdragons, or white Levante® Bianco from the same series — provide the classic blue-and-white combination of exceptional elegance that allows the blue to appear most saturated by contrast.
- Warm orange or golden-yellow companions such as Elegance® Clementin ranunculus provide the strongest color-wheel complementary contrast to the blue-violet of Levante® Blu — blue and orange being directly complementary colors that mutually intensify each other in arrangement.
- Silver-leaved dusty miller provides a neutral metallic backdrop that prevents the blue from deepening to purple in shadow, maintaining its blue character across varying light conditions in the garden.
Garden & Floristry Uses
- Anemone Levante Blue is an outstanding cultivar for premium cut flower production, wedding bouquets, luxury floral arrangements, collector gardens, patio containers, ornamental borders, and elegant landscape planting.
- Its vivid blue-violet flowers create dramatic focal points in bouquets and floral designs while providing exceptional visual impact in cool-season gardens.
