Dahlia Glorious: Variegated Tuber with Paint-Splashed Blooms

Create back-of-border drama with the spectacular Dahlia Glorious tuber. This tall, upright plant grows to approximately 130 cm with a spread of 45–60 cm, featuring strong branching and long, sturdy stems that hold the large blooms well above the mid-green foliage. The fully-double flowers are a show-stopping 16–17 cm and feature a unique, paint-splashed pattern of gold-yellow and scarlet-red. As a special surprise, roughly one plant in ten may produce a solid-red flower, ensuring a unique and varied display in your garden.

Dahlia Glorious provides an eye-catching focal point and is perfect for creating striking bouquets. The cut stems keep their beautiful pattern for 7–10 days in water, adding a dynamic flair to any arrangement. The plant offers a long flowering season from late November through March, and with consistent dead-heading and maintenance, you can expect over 70 blooms per plant.

Growing Calendar

  • Plant tubers: mid-September (once daytime highs fall to ≤ 38°C).
  • First flowers: late-November / early-December.
  • Peak display: December – March.

Best Uses

  • Back-of-border drama.
  • Large patio containers (≥ 45 cm).
  • Eye-catching cut stems that keep their pattern in water.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun; provide light afternoon shade or 30% shade-cloth if temperatures exceed 40°C.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, perfectly drained. Blend approximately 5 L of mature compost and ½ cup of crab & lobster shell meal into each hole.
  • Depth & spacing: Set tuber 10 cm deep, 50 cm apart; eyes up. Insert stake at planting to avoid damaging tubers later.
  • Water: After shoots appear, deep-soak every 3–4 days; allow the top 3 cm to dry between irrigations.
  • Feed (Fertilizing): Monthly low-nitrogen organic bloom fertiliser (~3-6-4) until February, then stop.
  • Maintenance: Pinch at approximately 40 cm for extra branches, dead-head spent blooms, and expect 70+ blooms per plant.
