French Melon Charentais (Cavaillon)
Indulge in the exquisite taste of Melon Charentais, also known as “Cavaillon,” a celebrated early-ripening melon variety from France, renowned for its incredibly juicy and aromatic bright orange flesh. The smooth, medium-sized fruits are round to oval in shape with faint ribbing, typically weighing between 0.7 and 1 kg (approximately 1.5 to 2.2 lbs).
The rind is a lovely light green to cream-colored, featuring a distinctive cork-like network pattern and attractive dark green stripes. Interestingly, the fruits are described as “almost non-wetted,” suggesting a unique surface texture.
Early Harvests and Greenhouse Suitability
Prized for its early maturity, the Charentais melon is also well-suited for forcing in greenhouses, allowing for even earlier harvests. To achieve its full, delectable flavor, ensure your Charentais melons receive plenty of heat and light throughout their growing season.
Optimal Sowing and Growing Practices
For a successful crop of heirloom Charentais (Cavaillon) melon seeds: For direct sowing, plant 3-4 seeds per hole, 2 cm deep, from February to March when the soil temperature reaches at least 20°C. For an early start, sow indoors in jars during December-January.
Transplant outdoors in late February-early March, ensuring all danger of frost has passed. Space rows 1.5-2.5 meters apart and plants 0.8-1.5 meters apart, adjusting for plant vigor. Thin each planting hole to a single strong seedling. Prune the main shoot above the fourth leaf and repeat this process with side shoots to encourage better fruiting.
Practice crop rotation, avoiding planting after solanaceous crops or other members of the cucurbit family. The typical seed requirement is 50-70 grams per 100 square meters.
