  • Uses: Salads, sandwiches, fresh slicing, soups and sauces
  • ‘Cloudy Day’ Hybrid is a productive indeterminate tomato bred to perform reliably during cool, cloudy weather. It is particularly useful for winter production and locations that experience periods of reduced sunlight.
  • The vigorous vines produce generous crops of glossy, pure-red tomatoes weighing approximately 115–140 g. The juicy, flavourful fruits are well suited to salads, sandwiches, fresh slicing, soups and everyday cooking.
  • ‘Cloudy Day’ is also valued for its reported resistance to both early blight and late blight. It reaches maturity in approximately 70 days after transplanting and continues producing while temperatures remain favorable.

Disease Resistance

  • ‘Cloudy Day’ is reported to have resistance to:
  • Early blight: Alternaria solani
    Late blight: Phytophthora infestans
  • Resistance does not mean complete immunity. Good spacing, airflow, clean irrigation practices and the removal of infected leaves remain important.
  • The stated resistance does not indicate protection against Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus, Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, root-knot nematodes, whiteflies or leaf miners.

Growing in Kuwait

  • Transplant outdoors from October through February. Planting from October to December provides the longest period for establishment and harvesting before excessive spring heat affects flowering and fruit set.
  • Provide at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight. Although this variety performs better than many tomatoes under cool and cloudy conditions, it is not a shade tomato. Insufficient light will still produce weak growth, fewer flowers and reduced yields.
  • Install a strong cage, stake or trellis at planting time because ‘Cloudy Day’ is indeterminate and will continue extending its vines throughout the growing season.
  • Plant the seedling slightly deeper than its nursery level, covering part of the lower stem to encourage additional root formation. Space plants approximately 60–75 cm apart to maintain airflow.
  • Water deeply and consistently, allowing the upper soil layer to begin drying between irrigations. Avoid severe fluctuations between dry and saturated soil, as these increase the risk of fruit cracking and blossom-end rot.
Feed with a balanced vegetable fertilizer during establishment. After flowering and fruit set begin, avoid excessive nitrogen and provide adequate potassium to support fruit development.
  • Production will decline as Kuwait’s temperatures rise. ‘Cloudy Day’ is adapted to cool, lower-light conditions but is not specifically bred for extreme heat or summer production.
