Amaranthus Cruentus Bronze Seeds
Amaranthus cruets Bronze is a tall, upright amaranth with fresh green leaves topped by dense bronze to chestnut plumes. Very autumnal in character and without the pistachio tones of Autumn’s Touch, it is a beauty for texture in borders and especially for cutting, where the plumes add instant drama to arrangements.
Plants reach 90 to 120 cm tall with very large, handsome dark green foliage and thick stems that need no staking. The branching plumes arise in late summer and continue well into autumn. From intense bronze to deep chestnut, the unusual colour shades are exceptional for adding texture to cut arrangements
Variety

- Family: Amaranthaceae
- Common name: Bronze Amaranth

- Height: Approximately 100 cm

Key Features
- Dense bronze-to-chestnut plumes unusual in the world of amaranth — pure autumnal character with no green or pistachio tones.
- Thick, strong stems requiring no staking.
- Natural multi-branching providing abundant cut flower stems.
- Easy to grow in full sun and any well-drained soil, even poorly fertile ones.
- Excellent fresh and dried cut flower.
- Heat and drought tolerant once established.
- Edible leaves and nutritious seeds.
- Attracts songbirds that flock to feast on its seed-rich plumes.
Plant Information
- Sun: Full sun — essential for the deepest, richest bronze plume color.
- Soil: Any well-drained soil, even poorly fertile ones.
- In very poor soils, mix in an organic granular fertilizer once seedlings reach 15–20 cm.
- Avoid excess feeding as it encourages leafy growth at the expense of plume development.
- Watering: Regular watering until established.
- Once mature, deep watering every two weeks during dry spells is sufficient.
- Drought tolerant after establishment.
- Staking: Not required — stems are naturally thick and self-supporting.
- In exposed windy positions, light support is beneficial.
- Pinching: Pinch the central stem tip when plants reach 30 cm to encourage branching and increase cut stem production.
- Pests and disease: Generally trouble-free. Occasional small beetles may damage leaves — treat with food-grade diatomaceous earth.
- Avoid overwatering which encourages fungal root and stem rots.
Seed Germination
- Germination temperature: 18–24°C. Light is required for germination — do not cover seeds with soil.
- Surface sow directly onto moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Press seeds gently onto the surface to ensure good contact. Maintain light, even moisture by gentle misting.
- Place in a bright, warm position.
- Days to germination: 7–14 days. Once seedlings develop their first true leaves, thin or transplant to final positions.
- Days to germination: 7–14 days
Growing Tips
- In Kuwait, Bronze Amaranth is a warm-season annual best sown indoors in August and transplanted to its final position in October–November.
- In raised beds, use a free-draining mix amended with moderate compost.
- Space plants 30–45 cm apart for adequate airflow and strong individual stem development.
- Pinching the central tip at 30 cm significantly increases branching and multiplies cut stem yield.
- If growing Bronze alongside Autumn’s Touch, position Bronze in the foreground — its deeper, darker tone contrasts beautifully with the lighter bicolor progression of Autumn’s Touch behind it.
- Plants will complete their cycle by March–April as Kuwait temperatures climb above 30°C, so begin early in the season to enjoy the longest possible display.
Gulf Planting Season
- Indoor sowing: August to September
- Transplanting outdoors: October to November
- Active growing and flowering season: October to April
- Not recommended for outdoor growing: April to August (extreme heat)
- Best treated as a warm-to-cool season annual in Kuwait.
- Thrives in full sun throughout the Gulf winter months.
- Sow early in the season to allow maximum growing time before April heat forces the plant into rapid seed-set and decline.
Harvest as Cut Flower
- For fresh use: harvest plumes when half to three-quarters of the flowers on the spike are fully open.
- Cut at the base of the stem and place immediately into water.
- Allow to rest overnight — this conditioning step is critical for vase longevity.
- Remove lower foliage to reduce wilting and reveal the colored spires.
- Vase life: 7–10 days.
- For dried use: harvest when seeds begin to set and plumes feel firm to the touch. Cut and hang upside down in a warm, well-ventilated space for a minimum of 10 days.
- High heat during drying helps the bronze tones deepen and hold their color long-term.
Garden and Floral Uses
- Makes a fine planting for the rear of the annual border and looks striking silhouetted against brick or painted wood.
- Place it in the center of a bed as a crown for the lower-growing varieties around it.
- Pairs beautifully with dark sunflowers, Celosia plume, and autumn Dahlia in warm-toned seasonal designs.
- In Kuwait raised bed gardens, it combines as a perfect duo with Autumn’s Touch — Bronze providing the pure deep autumnal anchor and Autumn’s Touch delivering the bicolor dynamic contrast.
- Birds will quickly find it and flock to enjoy its seed-rich plumes. Leaves can be harvested young for salads or cooked as spinach.
