Discover the reliable performance of Collard Vates (*Brassica oleracea*), an heirloom variety known for its uniform and compact non-heading growth. These slow-bolting plants produce large, blue-green leaves with a mild cabbage flavor, making them ideal for boiling.
Their excellent texture and flavor also make them well-suited for canning and freezing. Ready for harvest in approximately 75 days, Vates collards are also frost-resistant, extending their usability in cooler seasons.
The name “Vates” originates from the Virginia Truck Experiment Station, highlighting its history of research and development.
For a spring crop, direct sow seeds 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. For a fall crop, sow 6-8 weeks before the first fall frost. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, spacing a few every 12 inches and thinning to the strongest seedling.
For larger plants, provide 2 feet of spacing. Ensure regular watering and enrich the soil with compost or organic fertilizer during the growing season. Harvest outer leaves when plants are 10-12 inches tall.
This variety thrives in full sun and is suitable for USDA zones 3-12, reaching a height of about 30 inches.
