Dahlia Aphrodite: The Color-Changing Tuber

Bring a dynamic and beautiful display to your garden with the Dahlia Aphrodite tuber. This upright, bushy plant grows to a height of 70–90 cm with a spread of 50–60 cm. Its many light-green stems hold fully-double blooms, 10–11 cm across, that change in colour as they mature. Blooms begin creamy-white with cherry-pink tips, then transition to a delicate shell-pink with a luminous white center and a bright-yellow eye. The magic of this variety is that every stage of blooming is visible on the same plant at once, creating a constant show of evolving pastel tones. This dahlia is perfect for mid-border pastel schemes or for creating a stunning focal point in large patio containers.

Dahlia Aphrodite is an excellent choice for a continuous supply of cut flowers, with stems lasting 7–9 days in a vase. Cutting the blooms triggers the plant to produce more buds, ensuring a long and prolific flowering season. With proper maintenance, you can expect over 100 of these color-changing flowers per plant. Though staking isn’t usually needed in sheltered beds, a support is recommended in windy spots to protect the stems.

Growing Calendar

  • Plant tubers: mid-September (when daytime highs are ≤ 38°C).
  • First blooms: late November – early December.
  • Peak display: December – March.
  • Cut back / rest: early May.

Best Uses

  • Mid-border pastel schemes or mixed with deep-pink/cream dahlias for colour play.
  • Large patio containers (≥ 40 cm).
  • Continuous cut-flower supply—cutting triggers more buds.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun ≥ 4 h; put 30% shade-cloth if temperatures exceed 40°C during establishment.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, perfectly drained; work 5 L of mature compost and ½ cup of crab-&-lobster shell meal into each hole.
  • Depth & spacing: Plant tuber 10 cm deep, 45 cm apart; firm gently and water in.
  • Water: After shoots appear, deep-soak every 3–4 days; let the top 3 cm of soil dry between irrigations.
  • Feed (Fertilizing): Monthly low-nitrogen organic bloom fertiliser (~3-6-4) until late February, then stop.
  • Maintenance: Pinch at 30 cm for bushier plants; dead-head or pick blooms promptly to expect 100+ flowers per plant.
