Dahlia Flair: Cheerful Orange and Yellow Tuber

Brighten your garden with the Dahlia Flair tuber, a variety that brings a cheerful, playful ombre effect to your space. This upright, well-branched plant grows to an impressive height of 100–120 cm with a spread of 45–55 cm. It produces fully-double blooms, approximately 12 cm in size, in vibrant orange-yellow tones. In cooler weather, these blooms can flash with red highlights, and their colour intensity is richest when they first open, softening slightly with age to create a beautiful gradient. The long, sturdy stems make this dahlia an excellent choice for cutting, providing a burst of colour both indoors and out.

Dahlia Flair offers a long and healthy display, with its peak flowering period spanning from December to March. It is perfect for adding sparkle to mid-borders or for a lively focal point in large patio containers. With proper maintenance, consistent dead-heading can help you achieve over 100 blooms per plant, ensuring a continuous show of colour throughout the season.

Growing Calendar

  • Plant tubers: mid-September (once daytime highs fall to ≤ 38°C).
  • First flowers: late November – early December.
  • Peak display: December – March.

Best Uses

  • Mid-border sparkle.
  • Large patio containers (≥ 40 cm).
  • Excellent cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun; supply light afternoon shade or a 30% shade-cloth if temperatures exceed 40°C.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, and very well-drained. Work 5 L of mature compost and ½ cup of crab & lobster shell meal into each hole.
  • Depth & spacing: Set tuber 10 cm deep, 45 cm apart; eyes facing up. Stake at planting to avoid tuber damage later.
  • Water: After shoots appear, deep-soak every 3–4 days; allow the top 3 cm of soil to dry between irrigations.
  • Feed (Fertilizing): Monthly low-nitrogen organic bloom fertiliser (~3-6-4) until February, then stop.
  • Maintenance: Pinch at 35 cm for a bushier plant and dead-head spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
