Geranium Quantum Mix F1 Seeds
(Pelargonium x hortorum — Quantum Series — Zonal Geranium)
Geranium Quantum Mix F1 Pelargonium x hortorum — known commercially as the zonal geranium — is a large group of hybrids derived principally from Pelargonium inquinans, which occurs wild in southeastern South Africa, with parentage also including several other species such as P. zonal and P. frutetorum. They are compact plants with succulent green to pale bronze stems and almost circular to kidney-shaped, undulating leaves that have distinctive darker markings or zones. The flowers, massed on long-stemmed heads, may be single or double, are usually brightly colored, and appear over a long season.
The common name geranium causes widespread confusion. Pelargonium x hortorum belongs to the family Geraniaceae, as does the true genus Geranium — but the two are entirely different plants. The name geranium was applied to Pelargonium by early botanists who did not distinguish between the two genera, and the horticultural trade has continued using it ever since. Breeders have developed over 1,000 named cultivars of Pelargonium x hortorum — modern series were specifically bred for outdoor garden performance with improved heat tolerance and extended bloom periods.
Quantum is specifically described as delivering outstanding heat tolerance and long flowering in regions with high temperatures — a direct reference to its positioning as a geranium for climates beyond the cool European summer conditions that standard geranium series are optimized for. This unique series is less prone to shattering, offering great heat tolerance and a great display of color that lasts longer than the average geranium. The attractive star-shaped flowers play well with serrated foliage, making this an eye-catcher.
The flower form of Quantum is its most visually distinctive characteristic. Standard zonal geranium flower heads carry rounded, globe-shaped florets in compact clusters. Quantum produces star-shaped flowers of 10–13 cm — the pointed petal tips give each individual floret a more open, angular appearance that is clearly distinguishable from conventional round-petalled geranium types at a glance. The star form also contributes to the variety’s lower shattering rate — the more open petal arrangement is less prone to the petal-drop that affects conventional geranium varieties in heat, wind, and rain.
The Quantum Mix combines three commercially important colours — pink, red, and salmon — in a balanced formula mix where all colours are matched for uniformity in plant habit and flower timing. The serrated foliage — distinct from the smooth, rounded leaves of conventional zonal geraniums — adds texture and visual interest to the display independent of flowering, and creates a more informal, naturalistic appearance than traditional geranium series.

Germination Instructions
- Sow geranium seeds sparingly in pots or trays of good fine moist seed compost at 1.5 mm depth.
- Optimal germination temperature: 21–24°C (70–75°F). Lower temperatures may seriously reduce germination rates.
- Germination can take from 3–21 days depending on conditions provided.
- Cover seeds lightly with a thin layer of fine vermiculite.
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist — do not allow to dry out during germination.
- Once germinated, reduce the temperature to grow on cooler and transplant to individual pots when large enough to handle.
- Grow on at 16–18°C until well established before moving to the final outdoor position.
- Final spacing: 25–30 cm between plants.
- Total crop time from sowing to first flowering: 13–18 weeks.
- For Kuwait: sow indoors in air-conditioned conditions in August–September for transplanting in October–November.
- The 13–18-week crop time from August sowing aligns plants for peak flowering in December–January, the finest months of Kuwait’s cool season.
- Geranium seeds are sensitive to temperature — maintain consistently at 21–24°C throughout germination and do not expose seedlings to ambient outdoor temperatures above 30°C before transplanting.
Growing Tips
- Grow in full sun to partial shade in rich, light, well-drained soil.
- Specimens in baskets and containers will require regular feeding to maintain flower production. Ensure plants are regularly deadheaded to encourage flower production throughout the season.
- Water consistently — geraniums prefer to be kept slightly on the dry side between waterings rather than kept constantly moist. Allow the top 2–3 cm of compost to dry between waterings.
- In containers, ensure excellent drainage — waterlogged roots cause rapid decline.
- Feed with a high-potash liquid fertilizer every two weeks to maintain vigorous flowering.
- Remove spent flower heads completely at the peduncle when they begin to fade — this is especially important with Quantum as the star-shaped flower heads, while less prone to shattering,
- still benefit from regular removal to maintain the clean display and prevent botrytis in humid conditions.
- Quantum’s outstanding heat tolerance makes it suitable for Kuwait’s transitional season — plants will continue performing into April and May as temperatures rise, well beyond the point where conventional geranium series would begin to decline.
Gulf Planting Season
- Indoor sowing (air-conditioned, seed trays): August to mid-September
- Grow on indoors in air-conditioned conditions: September to October
- Transplant outdoors: October to November
- Peak flowering season: November to March
- Extended season: continues into April–May due to Quantum’s superior heat tolerance
- Note: Geranium Quantum Mix is one of the most heat-tolerant cool-season ornamentals in this catalogue — its specific selection for high-temperature performance makes it a genuinely year-round capable plant in Kuwait’s conditions.
- The August sowing is essential for the 13–18 week crop time to align with peak cool-season flowering.
- Unlike most cool-season ornamentals, Quantum will not immediately deteriorate as temperatures rise in March and April — it is specifically suited to bridge the gap between Kuwait’s cool season and the early summer.
- The star-shaped flower form and serrated foliage make it visually distinctive in mixed container plantings alongside conventional round-petalled geraniums, providing texture contrast and a modern alternative to traditional geranium aesthetics.
Garden Uses
- Quantum Mix delivers a great display of color that lasts longer than the average geranium — star-shaped flowers in a mix of pink, red, and salmon on compact well-branched plants that make an eye-catching display from container bench to garden border.
- The compact 30–35 cm habit makes it ideal for medium-sized containers of 12–15 cm diameter, for the mid-border position between front edging plants and taller back-of-border specimens, and for mass bedding displays where its uniform habit ensures a consistent carpet of color across large areas.
- The star-shaped flower form provides a visual alternative to conventional geranium types that is particularly effective in contemporary garden designs where textural variety and plant diversity are valued over traditional block color bedding.
- In mixed container arrangements alongside white and cream companions such as white petunia, cream alyssum, and silver dusty miller, the three-color Quantum Mix provides warm-pink to deep-red focal interest that anchors the arrangement. Premier Seeds Direct
