Grow Classic Crispness with Romaine Lettuce
Enjoy the refreshing crunch and excellent flavor of Lettuce Romaine (*Lactuca sativa*) in your own garden. This easy-to-grow lettuce forms large, upright heads with crisp, elongated leaves, making it the quintessential choice for Caesar salads and a variety of other fresh dishes.
Romaine lettuce is also a nutritional powerhouse, providing Vitamins A, B, C, and K.
Simple Growing for Abundant Harvests
Romaine lettuce thrives in full sun and prefers organic, well-drained soil. Sow seeds about 3mm (1/8 inch) deep in rows spaced 45cm (18 inches) apart. For optimal head development, ensure consistent moisture throughout the growing period.
Seeds typically germinate in 7-10 days, and you can expect to harvest mature heads in approximately 65 days. For a continuous supply of fresh, crisp leaves, sow seeds every two weeks.
Cool Weather Favorite
As a cool-weather crop, Romaine lettuce is best grown in the spring and fall. Sow as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. To extend your harvest into the cooler months, continue sowing every couple of weeks. Avoid planting in hot summer months, as high temperatures can cause the lettuce to bolt, resulting in bitter leaves. Harvest mature heads or pick individual leaves from the main stem above the base to encourage regrowth for a longer yield.
