Lisianthus Grandiflorum Alissa I Rose

1,950 KWD

Alissa I Rose is a professional-grade F1 lisianthus from Sakata — one of the world’s leading breeding houses for cut flower lisianthus — producing large, densely double blooms in a clean, warm rose-pink with lightly fringed petals on sturdy, well-branched stems. A Group 1 variety bred for commercial cut flower performance, it delivers exceptional stem quality, prolific budding, and a vase life of 14 to 21 days that few cut flowers can match.

Lisianthus Grandiflorum Alissa I Rose F1 Seeds

(Eustoma grandiflorum — Alissa Series Group 1 — Professional Cut Flower Variety)

Lisianthus — botanically Eustoma grandiflorum — is one of the most commercially important cut flowers in the world today, yet its journey from obscure wildflower to global floral industry staple is remarkably recent. It has gone from a relatively unknown American wildflower to a commercial crop of international economic importance in a remarkably short period of time. In the 1980s a group of American academics and plant breeders recognized the potential of this pretty purple wildflower and set the stage for the explosion of varieties seen today. Japanese breeders such as Sakata, Takii, and Sumika then further transformed the species into a wide range of flower colors, shapes, and sizes with broad market appeal.

Eustoma grandiflorum, commonly called prairie gentian, Texas bluebell, or lisianthus, is native to prairies and fields from northern Mexico north to Colorado and Nebraska. The genus name comes from the Greek words EU meaning good and stoma meaning mouth — a reference to the beautiful, wide-open trumpet of the wild species. In cultivation, this open bell form has been transformed through generations of breeding into the large, multi-petalled, densely ruffled bloom that defines the modern lisianthus cut flower.

The Alissa series from Sakata is an eye-catcher. It has large, double flowers abundantly filled with lightly fringed petals. Delicate colors and sturdy stems form an irresistible combination of strength and beauty. The Group 1 designation is a professional classification system used by commercial lisianthus breeders to indicate flowering response under different light and temperature regimes — Group 1 varieties are optimized for the earliest seasonal production windows, making Alissa I Rose an excellent choice for Kuwait’s cool-season growing calendar where plants sown (indoor)August will reach peak harvest from March onward.

Alissa I Rose produces its blooms in a clean, warm rose-pink — a color that occupies the mid-point between blush and deep cerise, with a warmth and depth that reads beautifully both in the garden and in cut flower arrangements. The large, double blooms are held on well-branched candelabra-type stems, with the primary bud opening first followed by a succession of secondary and tertiary buds that extend the harvest window significantly. All lisianthus initially produce one main bud, followed by side branches that develop many more buds — there are often three or four large buds per stem, and these are the ideal harvest stage. Buds that are mature enough will continue to open in the vase after cutting.

Lisianthus is much loved for its rose-like appearance and extremely long vase life. Even in plain clean water, lisianthus should last well more than a week — 14 to 21 days of vase life is not uncommon. This exceptional longevity places it in a category of its own among cool-season cut flowers.

Lisianthus has a reputation for requiring careful cultivation from seed — the pelleted seeds, fine germination requirements, and slow early growth demand patience and attention. However, in Kuwait’s cool-season climate, the growing conditions from (indoor)August onward align closely with the species’ needs, and growers who follow the germination and growing protocols correctly will be rewarded with one of the finest cut flower crops available to the home grower.

Germination Instructions

  • Lisianthus seeds are among the most demanding of any commonly grown cut flower and require careful attention to germination conditions.
  • Seeds require light to germinate — sow on the surface of a sterile, soil-less seed-starting mix and press gently in without covering.
  • Keep at 21–24°C with consistent moisture.
  • Pelleted seeds should be sown individually into cell trays — one pellet per cell — and kept consistently moist as the pellet must fully dissolve before the seed can germinate.
  • Germination typically takes 10–20 days at 21–24°C.
  • Do not allow trays to dry out at any point during germination.
  • Once seedlings have developed four to five true leaves, transplant carefully into individual 7–8 cm pots.
  • Grow on at 16–18°C until plants are well established before moving to their final position.
  • Total time from sowing to first flowering is approximately 5–6 months.
Important: High temperatures during the growing-on phase may result in rosetting — a stem elongation inhibition where the plant fails to bolt and remains in a flat rosette form.
  • In Kuwait, this is managed by keeping seedlings in air-conditioned conditions indoor through grow months until outdoor temperatures moderate.

Growing Tips

  • Grow lisianthus in full sun in well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–6.5. Lisianthus does not like acidic soil and benefits from regular balanced feeding throughout the growing season.
  • Water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged — overwatering is the most common cause of failure once plants are established.
  • Good air circulation is essential to minimize the risk of botrytis, which can affect developing buds in humid or still-air conditions.
  • Avoid wetting the foliage when watering.
  • To encourage bushy growth and maximize stem production,
  • pinch back plants to the third node when they reach approximately 15–20 cm in height.
  • For cut flower harvest, cut when the first two or three buds on the main stem are open — the remaining buds will continue to develop in the vase.
  • Place cut stems immediately into clean water or a holding solution to maximize vase life.

Gulf Planting Season

  • Indoor sowing (air-conditioned, pelleted seeds in cell trays): Augst
Grow on indoors in air-conditioned conditions: Augst to November
Transplant outdoors to final position: November
Peak cut flower harvest: In Spring
Note: The Group 1 designation of Alissa I Rose makes it the correct choice for Kuwait’s cool-season production window.
  • Sow pelleted seeds individually in Augst in air-conditioned conditions — ambient outdoor temperatures will cause rosetting if plants are exposed to heat during the critical seedling phase.
  • Maintain seedlings in air-conditioning until outdoor temperatures drop below 28°C before transplanting.
  • The 5–6 month growing period from September sowing aligns precisely with peak flowering in January to March, Kuwait’s finest cool-season months.

Garden & Floral Uses

  • Alissa I Rose is principally a cut flower variety bred to professional floriculture standards, and its highest value is realized in the vase rather than in the border.
  • Lisianthus has gone from a relatively unknown wildflower to one of the most sought-after cut flowers in the world, prized for its rose-like beauty, wide color range, and exceptional vase life of 14–21 days. In arrangements, the rose-pink double blooms of Alissa I Rose combine beautifully with white ranunculus, cream stock, blush anemone, and silver-foliage fillers such as dusty miller — the warm, clear pink reading as both modern and romantic depending on the arrangement context.
  • In the garden, well-grown lisianthus plants make a striking border specimen in the cool season, with the tall candelabra stems providing architectural height and the succession of opening buds maintaining visual interest over several weeks.
  • In Kuwait’s cool season borders and raised beds, Alissa I Rose planted in groups of five or more creates a professional cut flower garden display that transitions seamlessly from ornamental planting to harvest-ready crop.
