  • Mild & Sweet Flavor: Excellent for fresh eating and cooking.
  • Good Storage Quality: Stores reasonably well for a sweet onion.
  • Dual-Purpose: Can be harvested small as scallions.
  • Heirloom Variety: A time-tested open-pollinated selection.

Growing Your White Sweet Spanish Onion

Due to their long maturity time, starting White Sweet Spanish onion seeds indoors is recommended, especially in regions with shorter growing seasons. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in a flat 2-3 months before the typical start of the growing season.

Keep the soil moist and at room temperature. Once the tops begin to flop, trim them to 3 inches. Transplant seedlings 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. For direct sowing, sow three seeds per inch 1/2 inch deep in light, rich soil under full sun. Thin seedlings to 2-6 inches apart based on desired bulb size.

Ensure consistent moisture, particularly in the initial weeks of growth, and mulch to help retain moisture and control weeds. Harvest when the tops turn yellow or flop over.

Cure the harvested bulbs in the sun for about a week or in a dry, well-ventilated indoor space if it’s rainy. Once the skins are dry, cut the tops to 1 inch and trim the roots.

Store in a cool, dry place, noting that sweet onions don’t store for exceptionally long periods.
