Spicy Cayenne Peppers
Add a fiery kick to your cooking with Pepper Cayenne (*Capsicum annuum*), a variety that produces a generous amount of small, vibrant red fruits with a noticeable heat. These peppers are perfect for spicing up stews, salads, and stir-fries, bringing a delightful warmth to your dishes.
For the best and most abundant harvests, greenhouse cultivation is recommended. However, if you have a sunny and sheltered spot outdoors, you can still achieve a smaller, later crop. Some dwarf Cayenne varieties are also well-suited for growing in pots on your patio. Please handle with caution, as these peppers can irritate eyes and skin. Each packet contains approximately 60 seeds.
For greenhouse growing, sow seeds thinly indoors from February to April, about 0.5cm (¼”) deep in a tray of compost. Water thoroughly and place in a warm environment with a temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F), ensuring the compost remains moist. Seedlings should emerge within 7 to 21 days. Once they are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and continue growing them in cooler, but frost-free, conditions.
Plant out in their final positions in May or June, whether in large pots, growing bags, or directly into the greenhouse border, using warm, well-drained soil. For outdoor cultivation, delay indoor sowing until March or April.
After gradually acclimating the seedlings to outside conditions and once all risk of frost has passed, plant them out 40cm (16″) apart in a warm, sunny, and sheltered location. Remember that outdoor yields will likely be less than greenhouse-grown peppers and mature later. Harvest typically occurs from July to October. To encourage fruit set, gently spray the flowers with tepid water and feed regularly once flowers appear.
