Salvia (Sage) Sclarea Turkestanica

Grow the Elegant White Clary Sage ‘Vatican White’

Discover the noble beauty of Salvia sclarea turkestanica ‘Vatican White’, a distinctive white cultivar of clary sage that is a true garden gem. This architecturally striking plant features branched stems that culminate in a profusion of pure white blossoms accompanied by brilliant white bracts, creating a stunning visual display.

The impact of the flowers is further enhanced by the large petioles that encircle them. These elegant blooms rise above large, aromatic, mid-green leaves, which can reach up to 23cm (9 inches) in length and maintain their attractiveness throughout the growing season.

Thriving in both sunny and lightly shaded locations, ‘Vatican White’ is a magnet for beneficial pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, adding life and movement to your garden.

Salvia sclarea is known for its resilience and adaptability. While it will survive and even thrive in poor garden soil with minimal watering, resulting in smaller, tougher plants, richer soil and consistent moisture will encourage it to grow larger and more lush. This biennial plant will typically form a rosette of leaves in its first year, followed by flowering, seed production, and eventual decline in its second year.

However, deadheading the flower spikes before seed formation can often encourage the plant to return for another year. Whether you choose to enjoy the beautiful bracts in the garden or cut the elegant stems for flower arrangements, ‘Vatican White’ is a rewarding and striking addition to any landscape.

Germination Tips: Needs light to germinate, do not cover with soil or other planting medium. 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
