Scabiosa Atropurpurea Summer Fruits Seeds

(Pincushion Flower — Cut and Dried Flower Series)

Scabiosa atropurpurea Summer Fruits is part of the Sahin breeding program, a tall-growing annual scabiosa developed for its exceptional color blend and performance as a cut-and-come-again cut flower. The Summer Fruits color palette is inspired by summer berry tones, combining plum, deep raspberry, blackberry, burgundy, and soft lilac across the mix. This rich, jewel-toned range creates a cohesive and sophisticated display whether grown in the garden or arranged in bouquets.

The flowers are fully double pincushion blooms with a distinctive domed, layered structure surrounded by delicate outer florets. As each bloom matures, tiny white stamens emerge from the center adding an additional layer of elegant detail. The blooms carry a light, sweet honey-like fragrance that makes them particularly appealing in cutting gardens and patio plantings where the scent can be fully appreciated. Slender stems reach 60–90 cm in height and bloom consistently throughout the growing season Seedaholic, making this variety a reliable and generous producer from first flower through the end of the season.

Scabiosa atropurpurea is a cut-and-come-again bloomer, meaning that the more the stems are cut, the more new buds will develop to replace them. This productive habit makes Summer Fruits an exceptional value in the cutting garden. Vase life is 8 to 10 days when stems are cut as the flowers start to open and placed immediately into water Seedaholic. After flowers fade, the textured seed heads that develop can also be used in dried arrangements for additional ornamental value.

Plants are naturally attractive to bees and butterflies, making this variety equally valuable as a pollinator plant in cottage-style and informal garden settings.

Seed Germination

  • Seed depth: Surface sow or cover very lightly — light aids germination
  • Germination time: 7–14 days
  • Ideal germination temperature: 20–22°C
  • Note on seed shape: Scabiosa seeds are large, papery, and shaped like shuttlecocks. For best results, lay the seed on its side in the germination medium so the shoot can emerge easily from the back of the feathery area rather than the pointed end.

Growing Tips

  • Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before intended transplanting date.
  • Surface sow or cover very lightly as light aids germination, laying each seed on its side in the medium.
  • Maintain even moisture at 20–22°C until germination is complete. Once shoots appear, move seedlings to a bright, cooler area and grow on at 10–13°C to prevent stretching.
  • Transplant when seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves, taking care not to disturb the roots as scabiosa dislikes root disturbance at transplanting.
  • Space plants 25–30 cm apart in a sunny, well-drained position with fertile soil.
  • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
  • Once established, scabiosa is reasonably drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture and regular fertilizing.
  • Feed every two weeks with a balanced flowering fertilizer throughout the blooming period.
  • Pinching growing tips when plants reach 15 cm height encourages better branching and significantly increases stem yield.
  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to maintain continuous flowering.
  • For cut flower production, harvest stems when flowers are almost fully open and place immediately into cool water.
  • Taller plants may require light staking in exposed positions.
