Strawberry Montana Seeds

(Ornamental Everbearing Strawberry)

Strawberry Montana is a compact ornamental hybrid strawberry that bridges the gap between decorative garden plant and productive fruit crop. Montana is a beauty and a sweetie — compact and ornamental, it lofts a shimmery cloud of extra-large snow–white flowers in spring, soon followed by a season-long harvest of conical, medium-large sweet fruits.

The flowers of Montana are a significant part of its ornamental appeal. Unusually large for a strawberry variety, the snow-white blooms are produced in great abundance and are themselves edible, making a beautiful garnish for salads and drinks. The flowers attract pollinators strongly, which in turn supports excellent fruit set and yield across the season.

Montana is one of the most productive ornamental varieties, growing vigorously and producing sweet, heart–shaped fruit for the majority of the growing season. Plants develop a compact mounding habit with trailing runners that spill attractively over the edges of containers, making them spectacular in hanging baskets, window boxes, and decorative pots. The runners themselves root readily and can be pegged down to propagate new plants, further extending the value of each original plant.

Fruits are conical, medium-large in size, sweet in flavor, and well suited to fresh eating, baking, and making jams. Montana’s sweet flavor makes it a great choice for baking, jams, and eating fresh.

An important note for Gulf growers: Strawberry Montana is an everbearing variety that produces fruit prolifically during cool temperatures but will naturally pause or significantly reduce flowering and fruiting during the hottest months. In Gulf conditions, the productive season runs from autumn through spring, making October–April the primary cultivation window.
Strawberry seeds require cold stratification before sowing to break natural dormancy and achieve reliable germination. This step mimics the natural winter conditions the seeds would experience in their native climate.

  • Plant type: Perennial (grown as seasonal annual in Gulf conditions)
  • Habit: Compact mounding with trailing runners
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, pH 6.0–6.5
  • Water: Consistent moisture — keep evenly moist, avoid waterlogging
  • Spacing: 30–40 cm apart

Seed Germination

  • Seed depth: Surface sow — press lightly into soil, do NOT cover
  • Germination time: 1–6 weeks after cold stratification
  • Ideal germination temperature: 18–24°C
  • Important — Cold Stratification Required: Strawberry Montana seeds require cold stratification before sowing to achieve reliable germination.
  • Place seeds in a sealed plastic bag or container and refrigerate at 2–5°C for 3–4 weeks before sowing.
  • This step mimics natural winter conditions and breaks seed dormancy.
  • After stratification, remove seeds from the refrigerator but keep them sealed for 24 hours before sowing to allow them to acclimatize.
  • Seeds also require light to germinate — do not cover them after sowing.

Growing Tips

  • After completing cold stratification, sow Strawberry Montana seeds on the surface of a sterile, moist seed-starting mix.
  • Do not cover seeds as light is essential for germination.
  • Place in a warm, bright location at 18–24°C.
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not saturated — overwatering is the main cause of seedling loss in strawberries.
  • Germination is slow and variable, taking 1–6 weeks. Patience is essential.
  • Once seedlings develop their first true leaves, they can be transplanted into individual small pots.
  • Handle carefully as strawberry seedlings are delicate.
  • After 6 weeks in individual pots, seedlings are ready for their final containers or garden position.
  • Plant in rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter at a spacing of 30–40 cm.
  • Water young establishing plants well and consistently.
  • Apply a thin layer of mulch around the base of each plant to keep roots cool, retain moisture, and suppress weeds.
  • Feed every two weeks with a balanced strawberry or fruiting fertilizer throughout the growing season.
  • Keep the crown of each plant at or just above the soil surface — burying the crown causes crown rot.
  • Remove the first flowers that appear on very young plants to direct energy into root and plant establishment, then allow full fruiting from the second flush onward.
  • In Gulf conditions, provide shade cloth protection during the hottest summer months.
  • Plants will naturally slow or pause fruiting during intense heat and resume production as temperatures moderate in autumn.

Gulf Planting Season

  • Best sowing time in the Gulf: July–August (indoor cold stratification followed by sowing)
  • Transplanting: September–October
  • Expected fruiting: November–April
  • Note: Plants pause fruiting during summer heat. Protect from extreme temperatures above 35°C.

  • Baking and desserts
  • Jams and preserves
  • Hanging baskets — ornamental and productive
  • Window boxes and decorative containers
