Specific Germination Instructions Requiring Darkness (Pre-Chilling Recommended)

Starting Indoors: Sow seeds just under the surface of moist soil and water gently. Then, crucially, cover the container and keep it in a completely dark location, as darkness is required for germination. Maintain continuous moisture. An ideal temperature for germination is 20-22°C. Germination can be somewhat variable, taking anywhere from 21 to 50 days.

Some growers have found success by pre-chilling the seeds: Wrap seeds in a moist paper towel, place the paper towel in a zip-lock bag, and refrigerate for 7 days before sowing. After chilling, sow in cell packs or flats using a sterilized, soil-less packaged mix. Maintain slightly moist to almost dry soil conditions – avoid overwatering. Press seeds lightly into the soil and cover very lightly.
