Dahlia Cape Town: Add a Burst of Sunshine to Your Garden

Transform your garden with the vibrant beauty of Dahlia Cape Town. Cheerful, medium-sized bush with an upright habit and finely cut, dark green leaves. The sturdy stems hold a profusion of opulent, fully-double blooms, making them a focal point in any garden, border, or patio pot. Each magnificent flower measures 10 cm (4 inches) and features luminous yellow petals that are artfully brushed with scarlet-red near the centre, creating a striking and unique display.

The Dahlia Cape Town is a fantastic choice for gardeners, blooming generously from December until May. This long-lasting flowering period ensures you’ll have a continuous splash of bright colour throughout the cooler months. The robust nature of the plant, with its strong branches and sturdy stems, means the flowers are held well above the foliage, showcasing their beauty. Long-lasting cut-flower bunches, staying fresh in water for 7-10 days, allowing you to enjoy their beauty indoors as well. With the right care, you can expect to exceed 100+ flowers per plant throughout the winter.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Planting Time: Mid-September (when daytime temperatures are below ~38°C).
  • Light: Full sun is ideal. Provide light midday shade if temperatures exceed 40°C in the early season.
  • Soil: Use a rich, very well-drained soil. We recommend mixing 5 litres of finished compost and a handful of crab & lobster shell meal into each planting hole for optimal growth.
  • Depth & spacing: Set the tuber 10 cm deep, 40 cm apart.
  • Watering: Deep soak every 3-4 days after shoots appear, but avoid wetting the foliage.
  • Feeding: Apply a low-nitrogen organic bloom fertiliser monthly.
  • Maintenance: Lightly stake the plant and deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers.
