Dahlia ‘R Mona’ – Raspberry Red Waterlily Dahlia Tuber

Dahlia ‘R Mona’ is an elegant Waterlily Dahlia producing beautifully layered blooms with broad, softly curved petals and a graceful open flower form. The RHS currently lists the cultivar within the Waterlily Group.

Its flowers open in a rich raspberry to cherry-red color, with noticeably paler petal reverses. As the blooms mature, the red may soften slightly toward raspberry-pink, adding extra depth and variation to the flowers.

Blooms typically measure around 10–15 cm across, with approximately 14–15 cm being common in commercial production. Mature plants generally reach around 100 cm tall, occasionally growing taller under strong conditions.

Its elegant waterlily form, glowing red coloring and excellent cutting qualities make R Mona an outstanding variety for cutting gardens, bouquets and sophisticated floral arrangements.

Growing in Kuwait

  • For Kuwait conditions, Dahlia ‘R Mona’ is best grown during the cooler growing season once extreme summer temperatures have declined.
  • A practical planting period is: October to November
  • Plant tubers with the crown and growing eyes facing upward in fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Avoid excessive watering immediately after planting. Once shoots emerge and active roots develop, gradually increase watering while maintaining excellent drainage.
  • Provide strong sunlight during the cooler months, with some protection from intense afternoon heat as temperatures rise toward the end of the season.
  • Because plants generally reach approximately 100 cm tall, staking or plant support is recommended.
