Enjoy Sweetly Fragrant with Heliotrope Marine
Indulge your senses with Heliotrope Marine (*Heliotropium arborescens*), also known as “Cherry Pie” for its delightful sweet, ice cream-like aroma.
This terrific herbal landscape plant produces huge, showy clusters of deep purple, indigo-lavender flowers that are perfect for adding a touch of elegance to your garden or bringing indoors as fragrant cut arrangements. Growing into neat, bushy plants of 12-18 inches tall, ‘Marine’ heliotrope is easy to grow from seed and exhibits good resistance to common diseases and mildew.
For the earliest blooms, start Heliotrope Marine seeds indoors about 10-12 weeks before you intend to transplant them outside. These seeds require complete darkness to germinate, which typically takes 14-21 days. Once sprouted, move seedlings to a warm, sunny location indoors or harden them off before transplanting to a similarly warm spot outdoors.
Plant 3-4 seeds about ¼ inches deep and 12 inches apart in soil that is moist, organically rich, and well-drained, in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It’s crucial to keep the soil consistently moist as Heliotrope Marine does not tolerate drought. While generally hardy and vigorous, it’s advisable to monitor for common pests.
Please be aware that all parts of the heliotrope plant, especially the seeds, are poisonous and can be particularly toxic to horses. Exercise caution, especially if you have animals that might ingest the plant.
