Hibiscus Moscheutos Honeymoon Deep Red Seeds
(Hardy Hibiscus / Rose Mallow — Honeymoon Serie)
Hibiscus moscheutos Honeymoon Deep Red is the showstopper of the Honeymoon series — a landmark introduction in the breeding of seed-grown hardy hibiscus. Honeymoon is a truly eye-catching variety with real shelf appeal. It creates a naturally well-branched plant reaching 60 to 80 cm, ideal for large containers or for planting out directly in the garden. Honeymoon is a very heat-tolerant variety that will enjoy a sunny spot in the garden and with the correct production programme will make a very saleable, bushy, flowering plant in as little as 14 weeks from sowing.
Honeymoon Deep Red wows with 6-to-8-inch blooms of the deepest, most velvety red ever seen in the family. Wide, rounded, overlapping petals are neatly pleated and gently ruffled at the tips, which are slightly darker, as if outlining the bloom for greater effect. There has never been a Hibiscus like Honeymoon.
Massive flowers adorn compact and well-branched plants with excellent uniformity and PGR response, making for easy and efficient production. Well-suited for larger containers and perennial gardens.
Hibiscus moscheutos is native to the wetlands of North America and is classified as a hardy perennial in USDA zones 4 to 9.
In the Gulf context it is best treated as an annual warm-season flowering plant, sown in the cooler months and grown through the mild winter season to produce its spectacular spring display. The species’ natural heat and moisture adaptability — developed in the humid marshlands of the eastern United States — translates directly into strong performance under Gulf conditions when planted in well-watered containers or garden beds.
Honeymoon Deep Red is by far the darkest, richest red available in a hardy hibiscus, with impressive 6 to 8 inch wide, pleated and papery blossoms with ruffled edges. Naturally branching, heat-tolerant plants flower profusely, and Honeymoon Deep Red hibiscus blooms the first year from seed, often in just over 3 months.

Seed Germination
- Use a well-drained, disease-free, peat-based plug medium with pH 5.5 to 6.2.
- Sow seeds individually — one per cell in a large-cell plug tray or small individual pot.
- Cover seeds fully as darkness aids germination.
- Cover seeds with a thin layer of plug medium or coarse vermiculite, as darkness aids germination
- Keep the medium uniformly moist but not saturated.
- Media temperature should a warm at 24 to 27 degrees Celsius with medium to high humidity and maintain consistent moisture.
- Light is not required for germination.
- Once radicle emergence begins, reduce humidity to prevent stretch but maintain temperature and media moisture levels.
- Germination time is 3 to 5 days under optimal conditions.
- Begin fertilizing at radicle emergence of nitrogen 1–1,5 ml per liter of water from a balanced fertilizer.
- Important: Seeds are supplied pre-scarified. Despite the scarification, soaking seeds in warm water for 1 to 2 hours before sowing will further improve germination consistency.
Growing Tips
- For home gardeners: sow seeds indoors in warm conditions 10 to 14 weeks before the desired planting-out date.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors when they have developed 2 to 3 sets of true leaves and the stems have begun to strengthen.
- High light intensities produce short plants and promote better branching and more flowers per plant.
- Hibiscus grown at low light levels tend to be lower quality, becoming elongated and forming fewer branches.
- Space plants to allow good light penetration to basal branches.
- Hibiscus thrives in full sunshine, loves heat, and doesn’t mind drought.
- However, it does best in moist soils and even tolerates damp, poorly draining sites.
- Fertilize weekly with a balanced fertilizer of nitrogen 3–5 ml per liter of water throughout the growing season.
- Pinch young plants once at transplanting to encourage fuller branching — this adds approximately 2 weeks to the time to flower but produces a significantly bushier, more floriferous plant.
- Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering, as each stem produces multiple buds in succession.
Gulf Planting Season:
- Sow indoors in warm protected nursery conditions: August through October.
- Transplant to large containers or garden borders: October through November.
- Expected flowering: December through April, depending on sowing time and conditions.
- Honeymoon Deep Red is heat tolerant and will continue performing through Kuwait’s warm spring. Plants will slow or decline in the extreme heat of June through August.
- Treat as a warm-season annual with the primary sowing window in late summer and early autumn for a full winter-to-spring flowering display.
Garden and Floral Uses
- Hibiscus moscheutos Honeymoon Deep Red is suited for large premium containers, statement patio pots, ornamental garden borders, and focal planting displays.
- It is the perfect choice for garden and patio — compact enough for patio containers yet producing masses of dinner-plate-sized flowers that make it the showpiece of any setting.
- The extraordinary deep red blooms are among the largest flowers available from any annual or perennial bedding plant, creating an immediate and dramatic focal point.
- Honeymoon creates a naturally well-branched plant ideal for large containers or for planting out directly in the garden.
- The variety responds very well to growth regulators for professional production or grows naturally well without intervention in home garden settings.
- In the Gulf garden, plant Honeymoon Deep Red as a seasonal centerpiece in a large 30 to 40 cm container or as a bold back-of-border accent, and pair with complementary deep burgundy, dark foliage, or contrasting white companions to frame the extraordinary blooms.
