Grow Giant Kohlrabi Superschmelz (Giant White)
Prepare to be amazed by Kohlrabi Superschmelz, also known as Giant White! This German heirloom lives up to its name, producing truly massive, light green kohlrabi bulbs that can reach epic proportions of up to 10 inches across and weigh as much as 10 pounds!
What’s truly remarkable is that despite its enormous size, the flesh remains incredibly tender and buttery in texture, never becoming tough or fibrous. Originating from the town of Schmelz in Saarland, this spectacular variety is a champion in size and flavor.
For best results, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost, sowing them ¼ inch deep. Transplant seedlings outdoors with ample spacing – at least 18-24 inches between plants and 24-36 inches between rows – to accommodate their massive growth.
Superschmelz thrives in cool weather and requires very rich, well-amended soil and consistent moisture to reach its gigantic potential. Provide full sun to partial shade. Harvest when the bulbs reach your desired size, keeping in mind they can grow to an impressive scale while maintaining their tenderness.
Enjoy their mild, buttery flavor raw or cooked.
