Onion Red Seeds: Excellent Storage

Grow the versatile Red Marble Onion (*Allium cepa*)! This hybrid variety produces attractive squat bulbs with strong skins and a beautiful red color. Plant them close together for adorable red pearl onions or spaced farther apart to yield true cipollini bulbs around 5cm (2 inches) wide.

Red Marble cipollini onions are surprisingly firm and boast excellent storage ability, making them a standout at any market table. This long-day onion is best suited for growing in northern regions between the 38th and 55th parallels.

Key Features of Red Onion

  • Squat Red Bulbs: Distinctive flattened shape and vibrant red color.
  • Excellent Storage Ability: Keeps well after harvest.
  • Cipollini Type: Can be grown as pearl or small, flat bulbs.
  • Hybrid Seeds: Offers good uniformity and performance.
  • Versatile Planting: Grow close for pearl onions, spaced for cipollini.
  • Strong Skins: Provides good protection for storage.

Growing Your Red Onion

Sow Red Marble onion seeds every couple of weeks from March to May. Start indoors in February to mid-March, transplanting in April. Choose a location with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5.

Space transplants 5-6 inches apart in rows 18-30 inches apart. For pearl onions, plant closer. Water consistently, especially during bulb formation. Stop watering in early August to mature bulbs. Harvest when half the tops have fallen over. Cure bulbs in the sun for about a week until the outer layers are dry and crisp.

Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.
