Papaver Rhoeas Falling in Love Seeds
(Semi-Double Corn Poppy — Rose, Salmon, Coral and Picotee Mix)
Papaver rhoeas Falling in Love is a refined garden selection from the Flanders poppy species — the field poppy of European meadows, roadsides, and one of the most evocative wildflowers in the natural world. Where the wild species is a simple bright red annual, Falling in Love has been developed to showcase the full romantic potential of the species: a semi-double to double mix of picotees and bicolours in rose, salmon, and coral tones that together create one of the most warmly beautiful poppy palettes available.
The blooms are semi-double, in Valentine bicolors and picotees of red, scarlet orange, rose, pink, and peach — approximately 7–8 cm across, bobbing and swaying on slender, upright stems. The silky, luminous quality of Papaver rhoeas petals — often compared to crumpled tissue paper or fine silk — is shown to spectacular advantage in the warm rose-salmon-coral palette of Falling in Love. When backlit by morning or afternoon sun, the translucent petals glow with an extraordinary warmth that is almost impossible to replicate with any other annual flower.
Held atop 30-inch stems, the delicate, semi-double and double blooms are a mix of picotees and bicolors in rose, salmon and coral — one of the first poppies to bloom on the trial grounds, making Falling in Love an early performer in the cool-season garden. At 80 cm, this is a considerably taller variety than the compact Dawn Chorus, and its height makes it more suitable for the middle and back of borders, cutting gardens, and informal meadow-style plantings where the swaying stems create movement and grace in the garden.
This Dutch introduction offers rich, watercolor shades hard to find elsewhere in the garden. Cupped and rounded, the silky blooms arise very heavily on plants and are excellent for displaying in arrangements as with all Papaver rhoeas varieties, Falling in Love strongly prefers direct sowing and does not transplant well — the taproot is sensitive to disturbance and root disturbance typically kills plants. Sow directly where plants are to flower and thin to good spacing. In Gulf conditions, autumn sowing from October establishes plants through the cool season for flowering from December through February.

Seed Germination
- Sowing method: Direct sow — does not transplant well; root disturbance kills the plant
- Seed depth: Surface sow or very light cover — seeds require light to germinate
- Germination time: 7–14 days at 15°C
- Ideal germination temperature: 12–15°C
- Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of well-loosened, well-drained soil.
- Mix seeds with fine sand for more even distribution. Press lightly into the surface — do not bury. Water gently and keep consistently moist until germination occurs.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 20–25 cm spacing.
Growing Tips
- Falling in Love is among the most effortless and rewarding of direct-sow annuals — scatter on prepared ground in autumn, water through establishment, and be rewarded with a generous display of warm silky blooms through the Gulf cool season.
- Prepare the sowing area by loosening soil well.
- Papaver rhoeas performs best in recently disturbed, open, well-drained ground.
- Scatter seeds thinly on the surface, mixing with fine sand to aid even distribution.
- Press lightly into soil surface. Water daily until germination occurs, then reduce as plants establish.
- Thin seedlings to 20–25 cm apart once large enough to handle — generous spacing produces stronger, taller stems and larger flowers.
- Do not attempt to transplant thinned seedlings as they will not survive. For a continuous sequence of bloom across the Gulf cool season, make succession sowings every 2–3 weeks from October through November.
- Each sowing will flower approximately 10–12 weeks after germination, creating a rolling wave of fresh blooms across December through February.
- For cut flower use, harvest stems just as buds begin to show color and start to crack open.
- Immediately sear the cut stem end with a flame for several seconds or dip in boiling water, then place in cool water.
- The warm rose-salmon-coral tones of Falling in Love are particularly beautiful in mixed cottage-style arrangements alongside white flowers, soft blues, and complementary warm-toned annuals.
- Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous new bud production and extend the blooming season.
- Allow some plants to set seed at the end of the season for natural return the following year.
