Papaver Somniferum Flemish Antique Peony
1,000 KWD
Somniferum Flemish Antique Peony is one of the most historically celebrated and visually romantic annual poppies — producing large, voluptuous, fully double peony-style flowers densely packed with cream petals generously veined, striped, and splashed in old-fashioned rosy-red crimson. Reaching 90 cm on stout stems with distinctive silvery-blue foliage, Flemish Antique was the poppy of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish master paintings and remains one of the most opulent cottage garden annuals available today.

Papaver Somniferum Flemish Antique Peony Seeds
(Double Peony-Flowered Opium Poppy — Bicolour Cream and Rose)
Papaver somniferum Flemish Antique Peony is a flower with a history as rich as its appearance. In the 17th century, these were the poppies of celebrated Dutch and Flemish flower paintings, and in the 18th century this antique type was celebrated as being equal to carnations — a favored flower of that time. The name Flemish Antique is not merely decorative — it reflects a genuine lineage connecting this variety to the lavishly detailed floral still-life paintings of masters like Jan Brueghel and Rachel Ruysch, where the same crumpled, bi-colored peony blooms appeared as treasured specimens among roses, tulips, and irises.
The large, fully double blooms are cream in color and generously veined, striped, and splodged with an old-fashioned rosy, red — a bicolor combination that creates an effect unlike any solid-colored poppy. Each flower is unique, with the cream and crimson distributed differently across individual blooms, giving the display a naturally varied, painterly quality. Each bloom is densely packed with beautifully crumpled, bi-colored petals, creating a truly opulent display that sits atop strong stout stems adorned with distinctive heart-shaped, silvery-blue leaves.
Throughout the summer, large, fully double peony-shaped cream flowers splashed with rosy, red are followed by large, barrel-shaped blue-green seed pods that continue the ornamental interest after flowering. These seed pods are among the finest in the Papaver somniferum group — large, barrel–shaped, and elegantly crowned, they are outstanding material for dried flower arrangements.
As with all Papaver somniferum varieties, Flemish Antique strongly prefers direct sowing and does not transplant well — the taproot is sensitive to disturbance and transplanting typically kills or severely sets back plants. Sow directly where plants are to flower, thin to good spacing, and allow nature to take its course.
In Gulf conditions, Flemish Antique performs as a cool-season direct-sow annual, best established from October sowings for flowering from December through February. Self-seeding freely, plants that are allowed to set seed will naturalize in the garden and return the following season.

- Mix seeds with fine sand before sowing for more even distribution.
- Press lightly into the soil surface or cover very lightly.
- Water gently and keep consistently moist until germination occurs.
- Once seedlings appear and are large enough to handle, thin to 25–30 cm apart.
Growing Tips
- Flemish Antique Peony is one of the most rewarding direct-sow annuals in the cottage garden tradition — scatter seeds, water, and stand back.
- The essential rules are the same as all Papaver somniferum: direct sow only, never transplant, thin generously to good spacing.
- Prepare the sowing area by loosening the soil well — poppies perform best in recently disturbed, friable soil.
- Scatter seeds thinly on the surface, mixing with fine sand for easier distribution.
- Press lightly into the soil. Water daily until germination, then reduce frequency as plants establish.
- For a continuous flowering season in the Gulf, make succession sowings every 2–3 weeks from October through November.
- Each sowing will flower approximately 80–90 days after sowing, creating a rolling sequence of bloom across the cool season.
- For cut flower use, harvest stems just as the buds are beginning to crack open and show color.
- .Immediately sear the cut stem end with a flame for 5–10 seconds, then place in cool water.
- The bicolour flowers of Flemish Antique are particularly striking in arrangements — the cream and crimson combination works beautifully alongside white flowers, soft pinks, and deeper burgundy tones.
- Allow some plants to set seed at the end of the season for natural self-seeding and for harvesting the ornamental barrel-shaped seed pods.
- The large blue-green pods of Flemish Antique are exceptional in dried arrangements, fresh or dried.
