Scabiosa Atropurpurea Salmon Queen Seeds

(Pincushion Flower — Cut Flower Variety)

Scabiosa atropurpurea Salmon Queen is a reselected variety bred by Sahin in 1990, developed and refined specifically for its distinctive salmon-rose flower color and the length and strength of its stems. The salmon-rose tone it delivers is a warm, soft blend sitting between classic pink and coral — one of the most appealing and commercially versatile colors in cut flower scabiosa, combining easily with cream, white, peach, apricot, dusty rose, and soft purple in mixed bouquet designs.

The flowers are medium-sized, fully double pincushion blooms with the characteristic domed, layered structure of Scabiosa atropurpurea, surrounded by delicate enlarged outer florets that give each bloom its soft, cloud-like appearance. As blooms mature, tiny white stamens emerge from the domed center, adding a fine detail that makes the flower particularly distinctive when viewed closely. A light, sweet, honey-like fragrance makes this variety especially pleasant for cutting garden and patio use.

Salmon Queen is a prolific cut-and-come-again producer. The more stems are cut, the more buds the plant generates to replace them, making it one of the most productive and rewarding scabiosas for the cutting garden over an extended flowering period. Vase life is 7–10 days when stems are cut as flowers begin to open and placed immediately into cool water. After petals drop, the ornamental seed heads that form can also be used in dried and textural arrangements.

Plants are strongly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making Salmon Queen equally valuable as a pollinator-supporting garden plant in cottage-style and informal plantings.

  • medium so the shoot can emerge easily from the feathery end rather than the pointed tip.

Growing Tips

  • Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before intended transplanting date.
  • Surface sow or cover very lightly, laying each seed on its side in moist, well-drained germination medium. Maintain even moisture at 20–22°C until germination is complete.
  • Once shoots appear, grow seedlings on in a bright, cooler area at 10–13°C to keep plants compact and prevent early stretching.
  • Transplant when the first set of true leaves has developed, handling carefully to avoid disturbing the roots as Scabiosa dislikes root disturbance at this stage.
  • Space plants 25–30 cm apart in a sunny, well-drained position with fertile soil.
  • Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.
  • Once established, Salmon Queen is reasonably drought tolerant but responds well to consistent moisture and regular feeding.
  • Feed every two weeks with a balanced flowering fertilizer throughout the blooming season.
  • Pinching growing tips when plants reach 15 cm height encourages branching and significantly increases stem production and overall flower yield.
  • Deadhead spent blooms consistently to maintain continuous flowering. For cut flower harvest, cut stems when flowers are in bud stage or just beginning to open, place immediately into cool water, and allow to condition for a few hours before arranging.
  • Taller plants may benefit from light support netting in exposed positions.
