Silene pendula Sibella Pink Seeds

(Nodding Catchfly — Sibella Series)

Silene pendula Sibella Pink belongs to the award-winning Sibella series developed by Dutch breeder Van Hemert & Co. Sibella Pink produces a generous carpet of soft, bright pink semi-double flowers — a warm and friendly tone that sits between the deeper richness of Sibella Carmine and the cooler softness of Sibella Lilac within the series.

The small lacy blooms, approximately 2 cm across with five deeply notched petals, are borne in relaxed clusters above fresh shiny silver-green foliage. The overall visual effect is a soft, airy haze of pink that fills hanging baskets and container edges with continuous color throughout the cool growing season.

The Sibella series is defined by three characteristics that set it apart from older Silene pendula selections: a completely new spreading and gently trailing plant habit that fills containers from all sides; self-cleaning flowers that drop cleanly without deadheading or intervention; and a level of floriferousness — density of bloom coverage per plant — that makes each plant a genuine showpiece at any retail or garden setting.

All Sibella colors are Fleuroselect Approved Novelty Winners, confirming through independent international trials that each variety represents a genuine advance in plant performance and garden value.

Silene pendula is native to the Mediterranean region, giving Sibella Pink an inherent natural affinity for the growing conditions of Kuwait’s cool season: bright full sun, free-draining soil, mild temperatures, and low humidity from October through March. Once established, plants develop moderate drought tolerance, making them well-suited to Gulf conditions where consistent daily watering is not always practical.

Variety Details

  • Silene pendula Sibella Pink is an open-pollinated annual or biennial from the Sibella seriess.

Plant Information

  • Family: Caryophyllaceae.
  • Botanical name: Silene pendula.
  • Variety: Sibella Pink.
  • Breeder: Van Hemert & Co (Netherlands).
  • Type: Hardy annual or biennial.
  • Height: 30 to 40 cm.
  • Spread: 40 to 60 cm.
  • Flower: Semi-double, 2 cm across, soft bright pink, in lax clusters.
  • Foliage: Shiny silver-green, elliptical to lanceolate.
  • Exposure: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Water: Low to moderate — allow soil to dry slightly between waterings once established.
  • Soil: Chalk, sandy, or garden soil.
  • pH: Acid, neutral, or alkaline.
  • Drought tolerance: Moderate to high once established.

Seed Germination

  • Sow seeds in cell packs or flats and press lightly into the surface of a moist, well-drained seed-starting compost.
  • Cover only very lightly with a dusting of vermiculite or fine compost — light aids germination and heavy covering will reduce germination rates.
  • At 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, germination occurs in 7 to 14 days.
  • For annual bedding, grow on at 15 to 18 degrees Celsius after germination and transplant after 4 to 6 weeks.
  • For biennial use and early spring baskets, sow in autumn — September through October — and overwinter in a cool protected glasshouse environment.
  • In the Gulf context, sow indoors in a protected nursery from September through October for transplanting in October and November.

Growing Tips

  • After 6 to 8 weeks, plant one plant per 15 cm container or three plants in a 30 cm hanging basket or pot.
  • Pinch out growing tips when seedlings reach 8 to 10 cm to encourage a fuller, more branched habit and denser flowering coverage across the plant.
  • Vigorous plants fill containers and baskets quickly without staking or chemical growth regulation.
  • Water approximately once a week once established, increasing frequency during dry spells.
  • Do not overwater or allow the growing medium to become waterlogged — good drainage is essential to prevent root and stem rot.
  • Sibella Pink tolerates poor and sandy soils well once established, making it particularly well adapted to the lean, well-draining container mixes commonly used in Gulf gardening.
  • Plants may self-seed naturally if some flowers are allowed to mature — deadhead to prevent this if unwanted or allow seed to set for natural drifts in the following season. In Kuwait, plants will begin to decline naturally as April temperatures rise consistently above 30 degrees Celsius.

Gulf Planting Season

  • Sow indoors in protected nursery conditions: September through October.
  • Transplant to containers, hanging baskets, or garden beds: October through November.
  • Expected flowering: December through March, depending on sowing time and conditions.
  • Summer cultivation is not suitable. Silene pendula requires cool temperatures between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius for best growth and flowering.
  • Plants decline when daytime temperatures consistently exceed 30 degrees Celsius.

Garden and Floral Uses

  • Silene pendula Sibella Pink is ideal for hanging baskets, patio containers, window boxes, bedding borders, and seasonal small-scale ground cover.
  • The soft bright pink tone is one of the most versatile in the ornamental palette — warm enough to energize a planting scheme without overwhelming it, gentle enough to combine with nearly any companion plant.
  • In the Gulf garden it pairs beautifully with white Alyssum, blue or white Lobelia, Viola, Pansy, and Primrose.
  • It combines naturally with Sibella Carmine for a deeper rose-and-pink pairing, or with Sibella Lilac and White for a pastel multi-tone basket display.
  • The spreading trailing habit fills containers evenly from all sides, the self-cleaning flowers maintain a tidy appearance throughout the season, and the drought tolerance once established makes Sibella Pink one of the most reliable low-maintenance cool-season annuals available for Gulf Garden conditions.
