Rich Wine-Red Blooms on Strong Single Stems: Stock Katz Ruby

Grow elegant, wine-red cut flowers with Stock Katz Ruby seeds. This versatile, early-blooming series produces long, strong single stems adorned with 1 1/2–2 inch, richly colored blooms.

Known for its good uniformity in bloom time and stem length, Katz Ruby offers a significant percentage of double-flowering plants (55–60%) without selection, with the possibility of further selection. These Stock produce one impressive flowering stem per plant, making pinching inadvisable.

Enjoy the peppery, clove-like flavor of the edible flowers as a unique garnish. As a cool-weather crop, succession planting every two weeks will provide multiple harvests.

Growing Tips for Your Stock Katz Ruby Seeds:

Transplant (recommended): Sow ¼ inch deep into 128-cell plug flats 5-6 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Maintain a temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) for germination in 7-14 days. Do not pinch plants. Transplant into the field or protected structure, spacing plants 6 inches apart.

Succession plants every two weeks for continuous harvests. Provide trellis or horizontal support (like Hortonova) when temperatures are consistently above 60°F (16°C) or in rainy areas. Protect young plants from flea beetles with row covers.

Selection for Double Flowers (Optional): To increase double flowers, chill seedlings in the cotyledon stage at 40-45°F (4-7°C) for 3-4 days. Select lighter green, oval-shaped cotyledons for double flowers; discard darker green, rounder, or very small seedlings.

Light Preference: Full sun.

Plant Height: 24–32 inches.

Hardiness Zones: Annual (cool-weather crop).
