Dahlia Ice Breaker: Enormous Ivory and Lemon Tuber

Create a stunning, romantic display in your garden with the Dahlia Ice Breaker tuber. This variety produces enormous, lightly ruffled double blooms that measure a spectacular 25 cm. The outer petals open a soft pale lemon and mature to a beautiful ivory-white, giving each flower a soft two-tone effect that appears “frost-tipped.” Although it is a dinner-plate dahlia, the plant itself remains compact, growing to a height of 100–120 cm and a spread of about 60 cm, with stout stems that hold the massive blooms with elegance.

Dahlia Ice Breaker is the perfect choice for luxurious cut flower arrangements. Its beautiful creamy tones are ideal for weddings or elegant “white & gold” bouquets, and the flowers can last for 7–10 days in a vase if conditioned properly. The plant offers a long flowering season from early December through March, and with consistent dead-heading, you can expect to enjoy 40–60 of these magnificent dinner-plate blooms per plant.

Growing Calendar

  • Plant tubers: mid-September (when daytime highs are ≤ 38°C).
  • First blooms: early December.
  • Peak display: December – March.

Best Uses

  • Romantic winter borders.
  • Statement pots (≥ 45 cm).
  • Luxurious cut stems for weddings or elegant arrangements.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun; provide light afternoon shade or a 30% shade-cloth if temperatures exceed 40°C during establishment.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, perfectly drained. Work 5 L of mature compost and ½ cup of crab & lobster shell meal into each hole.
  • Depth & spacing: Plant tuber 10 cm deep, 50 cm apart; eyes up. Insert a stake now to avoid damaging tubers later.
  • Water: After shoots appear, deep-soak every 3–4 days; allow the top 3 cm to dry between irrigations to deter rot.
  • Feed (Fertilizing): Monthly low-nitrogen organic bloom fertiliser (~3-6-4) until February, then stop.
  • Maintenance: Pinch at 35 cm for extra branches; dead-head or harvest stems to renew flowering.
