  • Diamond Eggplant is a productive Ukrainian heirloom valued for its attractive dark-purple fruits, compact growth and excellent culinary quality. The upright plants typically reach around 60 cm and can produce clusters of four to six slender fruits.
  • The glossy fruits usually grow 15–23 cm long, with tender greenish-white flesh, an excellent texture and a mild flavor that is rarely bitter. The variety was collected in Ukraine and introduced to Seed Savers Exchange in 1993.
  • Its manageable plant size makes Diamond a practical choice for raised beds, productive kitchen gardens and large containers.
    Growing in Kuwait
  • For Kuwait’s growing season, transplant Diamond Eggplant seedlings from late September through November for the strongest establishment and longest productive period.

Choose a location with:

  • Six to eight hours of direct sunlight during the cooler months
  • Fertile, well-draining soil
  • Regular and even watering
  • Protection from strong wind
  • Afternoon shade when temperatures become intense
  • Space plants approximately 45–60 cm apart. When growing in a container, use one plant per 20–30-litre pot and provide a stake once fruit production begins.
  • Eggplants enjoy warm conditions, but this must not be confused with tolerance of Kuwait’s extreme summer heat. Very high temperatures, dry soil and hot wind can reduce flowering and fruit set. Even seed suppliers note that eggplants may fail to set fruit during excessively hot conditions or drought.

Harvesting

  • Harvest the fruits while their skin is smooth, firm and glossy. Do not wait until they become dull, oversized or hard, as this usually indicates mature seeds and declining eating quality.
  • Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing new fruits.

Culinary Uses

  • Diamond Eggplant’s mild flesh and useful medium size make it suitable for:
  • Grilling and roasting
  • Stuffing
  • Moussaka
  • Ratatouille
  • Curries and stews
  • Stir-fries
  • Baba ghanoush and other eggplant dips
