Easy-to-Grow Scarlet Flax
Bring a vibrant splash of red to your garden with Scarlet Flax (*Linum grandiflorum rubrum*). This easy-to-grow annual wildflower produces brilliant scarlet, 5-petal flowers on elegant, stately stems adorned with narrow grey-green leaves. While individual blooms may be fleeting, lasting only a day or so, a continuous succession of new flowers ensures a long and dazzling display throughout the season.
These stunning, deep red blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and a variety of other beneficial pollinators, adding life and activity to your garden. This heat-resistant variety is also a naturalizer, readily reseeding itself without becoming invasive, ensuring its return year after year.
For successful planting, sow Scarlet Flax seeds directly into your garden when the soil temperature is consistently warmer than 15°C (60°F), which is typically in late spring or early summer. Choose a sunny location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Space the seeds about 2.5 cm (1 inch) apart and plant them at a shallow depth of 3 mm (1/8 inch), gently pressing them into the soil to ensure good contact. Water the planted area with a gentle mist or shower to avoid disturbing the seeds. It’s crucial to keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, during the germination period. Once seedlings emerge and begin to grow, thin them to a final spacing of about 25 cm (10 inches).
Keep the soil moist until the plants are well established, after which they become quite drought-tolerant and will only require watering as needed. Feeding plants once per week can encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering. To promote continuous blooming, regularly remove spent flowers (deadheading). For a simpler approach with a large planting, you can trim the plants back by about one-third.
