Shasta Daisy Alaska
Bring the timeless elegance of classic daisy blooms to your garden with Shasta Daisy Alaska (*Chrysanthemum maximum*). This hardy perennial produces beautiful, bright white flowers with cheerful yellow centers, creating a sunny and inviting display. Known for attracting butterflies and a variety of other beneficial pollinators, Shasta Daisy Alaska is a wonderful addition to any wildlife-friendly garden. Its sturdy stems make it an excellent choice for cutting and bringing indoors to enjoy its simple beauty.
With a long flowering period and low maintenance needs once established, it’s a reliable and rewarding perennial for borders and edging.
For successful growth, it’s recommended to start Shasta Daisy seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before your anticipated outdoor planting time. Sow seeds according to the instructions and keep them moist. Once seedlings are large enough and the weather is suitable, transplant them to a location that receives at least 6 hours of full sun each day and is sheltered from strong winds. Ensure the soil is well-draining.
While establishing, keep the soil consistently moist, but once mature, Shasta Daisies are quite tolerant of dry soil and actually prefer the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. It’s best to water at the base of the plant to avoid prolonged dampness on the foliage, which can lead to diseases. Pinching back early flower buds when the plant reaches about 15 cm (6 inches) tall can encourage bushier growth and ultimately result in more blooms.
Be aware that Shasta Daisies grown from seed may not produce a full display of flowers until their second year. To encourage continuous blooming, regularly remove spent flowers (deadheading). Harvest the lovely daisy blooms for your indoor arrangements when they are fully open.
