  • Burpee’s ‘SuperSteak’ Hybrid is an indeterminate beefsteak tomato developed to produce exceptionally large, deep-red fruits with rich flavor and a dense, meaty texture. Individual tomatoes commonly reach around 450 g, while well-managed plants may produce fruits approaching 900 g.
  • The vigorous vines continue growing and flowering throughout the season, producing large slicing tomatoes until environmental conditions become unsuitable. The fruits have smooth to slightly ribbed shoulders, firm flesh and the classic flavor expected from a beefsteak tomato.
  • This variety is an excellent choice for gardeners wanting impressive, oversized tomatoes for fresh slicing, burgers and sandwiches. Burpee lists ‘SuperSteak’ as an indeterminate F1 hybrid requiring approximately 80 days to mature, with fruit potentially weighing around 2 lb. Burpee – SuperSteak Hybrid Tomato

Disease Resistance

  • ‘SuperSteak’ F1 is commonly listed with resistance to:
  • V: Verticillium wilt
    F: Fusarium wilt, race 1
    N: Root-knot nematodes
  • Disease resistance reduces risk but does not make the plant immune. In particular, nematode resistance should not be presented as complete protection: high soil temperatures and severe infestation may reduce its effectiveness. Crop rotation, healthy soil and clean growing media remain necessary.

    Growing in Kuwait

  • Transplant outdoors from October through February, with October to December generally offering the longest productive season. Choose a location receiving at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight.
  • Install a strong cage, stake or trellis at planting time. This is an indeterminate tomato—not a compact bush variety—and its vines and heavy fruits require substantial support. Tie the stems loosely as they grow and support particularly heavy fruit clusters when necessary.
  • Plant the seedling slightly deeper than it was growing in its nursery pot, covering part of the lower stem to encourage additional root development. Space plants 60–90 cm apart to maintain airflow.
  • Keep soil moisture consistent, especially once fruit begins developing. Irregular watering increases the risk of fruit cracking and blossom-end rot. Mulching can help stabilize soil moisture and protect the roots as temperatures rise.
  • Feed initially with a balanced vegetable fertilizer. After flowering and fruit set begin, avoid excessive nitrogen and provide adequate potassium. Excess nitrogen encourages vigorous foliage at the expense of fruit production.
  • For maximum fruit size, limit each cluster to one or two well-formed fruits. Without thinning, the plant may produce more tomatoes, but their average size will usually be smaller.
  • Tomato fruit set declines during excessive heat. In Kuwait, production may slow sharply when daytime temperatures exceed approximately 32–35°C and nights remain warm. ‘SuperSteak’ is not specifically classified as a heat-setting tomato, so it should not be promoted as suitable for summer production.
