  • Zucchini ‘Atena Polka’ F1 is an early and highly productive yellow zucchini with an attractive golden-yellow to yellow-orange color. Its vigorous bush-type plants produce plentiful, smooth fruits with creamy flesh, tender skin and a mild, slightly nutty flavor.
  • For the best texture and continued production, harvest the young fruits regularly when they reach approximately 15–20 cm long. The fruits are excellent for grilling, sautéing, roasting, stuffing and adding fresh color to vegetable dishes.
  • The hybrid is reported to have a degree of parthenocarpic fruit-setting ability, meaning some fruits may develop when pollination conditions are imperfect. However, good bee activity or hand-pollination will normally improve fruit set and produce better-shaped zucchini. The variety is described as early, beginning production approximately 45–55 days after emergence.

Growing in Kuwait

  • Transplant outdoors once intense summer heat has declined, typically from late September or October. A second planting can be made from January to February for harvesting before severe late-spring heat.
  • Choose a location receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight. Allow approximately 70–100 cm between plants because, although this is a bush-type zucchini, its mature leaves occupy considerable space.
  • Plant the seedling at the same depth at which it was growing in its nursery pot. Avoid burying the stem deeply and minimize root disturbance during transplanting. Water thoroughly after planting, then maintain consistent moisture without leaving the roots waterlogged.
  • Enrich the soil with mature compost before planting. Once flowering begins, apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer containing adequate potassium. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can create oversized foliage while delaying flowering and fruit production.
  • The first flowers may be male flowers, which is normal and does not indicate a problem. When female flowers appear, bees usually handle pollination. Inside screened growing areas, transfer pollen from a newly opened male flower to the center of a female flower early in the morning.
  • Harvest frequently while the fruits are young. Allowing several fruits to become oversized can slow the production of new zucchini. Growth and fruit set may decline significantly when temperatures become excessively hot.
