Balloon Milkweed – Seedling

  • Correct product name: Balloon Milkweed
  • Botanical name: Gomphocarpus physocarpus
  • Former botanical name: Asclepias physocarpa
  • Other common names: Balloon Plant, Balloon Cotton Bush, Swan Plant
  • Plant type: Fast-growing tender perennial
  • Growth habit: Tall, upright and branching
  • Mature height: Approximately 1.2–1.8 metres
  • Mature spread: Approximately 60–90 cm
  • Flower colour: Creamy white with pink or purple details
  • Fruit: Inflated, pale-green balloon-shaped pods
  • Best uses: Butterfly gardens, ornamental beds, large containers and floral arrangements
  • Balloon Milkweed is a distinctive ornamental plant known for its small waxy flowers and unusual inflated seed pods. The pale-green pods are rounded, softly bristled and may reach approximately 5–8 cm across, giving the plant its familiar “balloon” name.
  • It is also a host plant for caterpillars of Danaus butterflies and can help support butterfly gardens. The plant grows rapidly into a tall, vase-shaped specimen that is most effective at the back of borders or in large containers.
  • The stems and mature pods may also be used in fresh or dried floral arrangements.

Growing in Kuwait

  • Recommended planting period: September to November
  • Best outdoor performance: Autumn through spring
  • Sunlight: Full sun during mild weather; afternoon protection as temperatures rise
  • Plant spacing: Approximately 60–90 cm
  • Container growing: Use a large, stable container with good drainage
  • Soil: Fertile, moderately moist and well-drained
  • Watering: Water consistently during establishment, then allow slight drying between waterings
  • Support: Tall plants may require staking in exposed or windy locations
  • Summer care: Protect from extreme afternoon heat or retain in a cooled, shaded growing area
  • Aphids—especially oleander aphids—commonly gather on milkweed stems and new growth. Inspect plants regularly rather than assuming yellow clusters are flower buds or harmless insects.

Pollination and Seed-Pod Note

  • Balloon Milkweed is self-incompatible. For dependable pod and seed formation, grow at least two genetically different seedlings near each other and allow access to pollinating insects.
  • Once mature pods begin to split, remove or bag them if unwanted self-seeding is a concern. The seeds carry silky fibres and disperse readily in the wind.
